REFINED SUGAR!
It is not a benign “food”. It is not a food at all, and it does not belong in your body or your children’s. It is a processed, isolated, concentrated substance far-removed from the food sources it began in — sugar cane and beets. You would NEVER be able or want to eat the pounds of sugar cane or beets that you can easily ingest in a teaspoon or tablespoon of processed, refined sugar!
And, your body is NOT made to be able to “handle” that amount of sugar, either. You would never be able to get that much sugar on a daily hunter-gatherer diet, which your hundred-thousand year old Paleolithic biochemistry is used to!
You will have to work to eliminate refined sugar (”table sugar”) from your diet, but it is possible to do so AND it is possible to have the sweet-taste from other alternative foods, that we all enjoy without compromising our Health.

And, by the way, Dr. Thomas Rau, MD reveals that the sugar processors use the dreaded poison, ARSENIC, in the refining of sugar, in his book “The Swiss Secret to Optimal Health”. Where else would you be exposed to arsenic in a food process?
Time to give your children healthy options to trade-in the majority of their bad candy for, and think about how to avoid exposing the neighborhood kids to this food danger, too, at Halloween Trick-or-Treat time.

Great post! And more than just sugar, any food that raises your blood sugar in a hurry. Most people wouldn’t consider a baked potato to be sugar, but it does have a high GI.

Nice to hear from you again.
You are correct that the Glycemic Index of all foods is another important factor here.
We’ll talk about GI in detail, over time.
One of the ways to responsibly use a high GI index food, if it has merit in other nutritional ways (which potatoes do), is to make sure that you are eating it with healthy fats in the same meal — olive oil, macadamia nut oil, hemp oil, flax oil, salmon or other cold water fish, avocadoes, almonds are good choices. The fats will slow down the processing of the higher-insulin response (high Glycemic Index) food and prevent spikes in your blood sugar level.
BTW, potatoes are a positive food when eaten correctly i.e. not fried or deep-fried; always eating the well-washed, cooked skin. Potatoes are a very alkaline food that have anti-viral qualities, too. You can learn to eat well-washed potatoes raw, too. They are very healing to your stomach when eaten that way.
BUT, Dr. Alan Greene, MD suggests in his book that all of us use only organic potatoes, because this food is usually the highest sprayed crop on conventional farms! (probably mostly after harvesting)In America, potatoes account for 30% of our vegetable consumption, so this change to organic potatoes is a serious diet change to prevent ingestion of large amounts of unwanted chemicals. A 2006 study from the US Dept. of Agriculture showed pesticide residues remaining in conventionally-farmed potatoes even after thorough washing and even after peeling!
Returning to SUGAR, which is a special, non-food, factory-processed demon. Fake sugars known as “artificial sweeteners” are made in the lab e.g. Nutrasweet, Splenda, Equal and the rest and they are also NOT a solution to people who want to over-dose on sweetness, as they wreke special physiologic havoc on your body in some of the same ways as sugar and a few more problems come with them too.
The best recommendation is to only eat food in the forms that Nature originally made it — keep it as whole as is reasonable and possible e.g. even monkeys peel bananas! Some parts just don’t taste good — usually for a biologically-protective aspect of the plant. Trust your instincts.
But, in Nature, humans and all living species would never eat the amounts of naturally-occurring sugars as we can easily ingest from factory-processed sugars tainting our foods. Our bodies just simply cannot deal with THAT amount of sugar — and it’s not worth ruining your Health or dying for it!
