Just this week, the Robert Wood Johnston Foundation (of Johnston & Johnston baby shampoo fame) announced the largest private grant, $500 million US Dollars, to try to fight childhood obesity for the next 5 years in the United States.
In America, an estimated 25 million children under 17 are already overweight, and likely headed for Type 2 diabetes, in my opinion.
This is already 1/3 of the children under 17.
“The younger generation is going to live sicker and die younger than their parents because of obesity.” says Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey of the Foundation.
So, what is causing the obesity? Can parents and society turn this around? How?
In my opinion, the following are serious contributors to this epidemic.
___ Poor nutrition
___ Too much unnatural “food”
___ Little understanding of what one must do to be healthy
___ Too much stress and lack of coping skills
___ Get your child to have the chance to be active, and be able to express their emotions, many times during the day!
Become a child advocate. Get Physical Education and Art Education back into your children’s schools on a daily basis. Whether it is the classroom teacher or a trained physical education coach, children in elementary through high school should be required to have PE everyday.
When this financial cut-back started happening in the ’80s, I knew where this was going to lead and hoped sanity would return. Well, it hasn’t and I’ve watched the Humanities fall on the school funding chopping-block, too, and that reduces another way for children to relieve the pent up energy and stress inside themselves.
Stress has to be released or it causes great damage. Exercise and self-expression are two known and inexpensive medicines for stress relief.
Until this school activity can be in place, make sure your children DO get daily play time, preferably outside when it is sunny.
Get them in touch with the rhythms of the seasons and the harmonic of the Earth. This will help re-tune them and strengthen them by re-Harmonizing them. We feed on these Universal Energies, which are not available to us in closed, electrically-bombarded rooms! Learn more about how the Earth’s Harmonic Schumann Resonance heals in Dr. Warren Grossman, PhD’s book “To Be Healed by the Earth”.
___ Help your child learn other coping skills, including meditation and yoga and family time to ‘talk-things-out’ daily. There are lots of classes and video tapes and a few books. Check health stores and online.
___ Teach your children about taking care of their health. If you don’t feel qualified, talk to your pediatrician for suggestions. Set up home with a big board to remind them of the steps and reward them, when young, for accomplishing them. Reward teenagers, too, just introduce the topics and system in a more grown-up way, and show them that it is in their best interest to learn early … play up “looking good” versus ill health being very unappealing etc. Whatever works! Better to start when young, but we have to deal with an older group, too, at the moment.
___ Get the junk food out of the house! (Read my beginning expose about artificial sweeteners in the article below on The Tsunami of Diabetes.) There should be NO artificially sweetened anything!
Other types of nutritional disasters should not be in your pantry – whether they are just empty calories or full of artificial ingredients or high salt or poor-grade commercial-fat foods.
Your meals should include only Celtic Sea Salt and healthy fats — organic olive oil, avocadoes, flax seed and flax oil (never cook with it; cold only — keep in refrigerator), hemp seed and hemp oil (same care as for flax), macadamia nut oil, healthy nuts — almonds, Brazils, macadamias.
Also, every real food should be available. Parents need to show children proper portion size and frequency. If you don’t know these, learn. Both of you go to a dietetic consult or if you have no health coverage, look at books in your local library. Barry Sears, PhD “Zone Food Blocks” has just food lists and their portions, which is very useful. Part of it is online. See URL below.
Learn how to handle and include real, natural foods of all kinds, so no food is heightened, in your psyche or theirs, because it is ‘forbidden’.
___ Cook together and eat together, at the table. Use family meals at the table as one place to make many constructive things happen and double-up on your precious time. Nothing should stand in the way of this happening as many times a week as possible, but I suggest a minimum of 3 evening meals.
___ No dairy. Use calcium-magnesium- Vitamin D supplements (appropriate dose) and lots of fresh, dark green leafy vegetables, fish with bones (only mashed sardines or mashed canned salmon)(not for babies or children under 2), fortified nut milks, sesame seeds (as tahina spread or halavah or a sprinkle of seeds) or other high calcium foods.
Why no dairy? It is seriously implicated in the onset of Juvenile Diabetes (Type 1) by destroying the Islets in kids’ pancreases and dairy can contribute to Type 2 diabetes by initiating insulin resistance. Learn more at phmiracleliving.com below. There are several milk articles on that page.
In Scandinavian studies, in 2005, Hoppe et al at the Department of Human Nutrition for Advanced Food Studies, in Fredericksburg, Denmark, found “high” daily intake of dairy products doubled insulin resistance * in 8 year old boys. The children ate 53 grams of dairy protein to produce this result.
Whole societies in this world never used dairy. It is not necessary if you use a varied, fresh diet with plenty of calcium sources — and milk for baby cows was never suitable for human babies, children or adults anyway. It is completely the wrong nutritional profile when compared to human mothers’ milk. The closest to human milk is goat milk.
Try to breast-feed your baby, and pump breast milk if you have to go back to work before weaning your child. Breast feed for at least 6 months and a little longer is even better. Yes, it’s a committment, but you cannot give your child a healthier start, and it helps you, too, physically and psychologically. The biochemistry of both of you is “normalized” when you breast feed. Without it, your baby’s formula does not have everything it would have in human milk, and you put yourself in an abnormal ‘exit’ from pregnancy, too. Maybe this is why there’s so much post-partum depression happening among new mothers these days. While breast feeding, you need to continue to monitor that you are only eating healthy (preferably organically) and you are being exposed to only healthy environments. Many modern substances manage to adulterate human breast milk if you ingest them. British studies show increased IQ in children who are breast fed.
* To get a scientific definition of insulin resistance:
___ Teach your children life skills. In this regard, especially, get them involved in growing healthy food, buying healthy food, cooking healthy foods!
___ Pack your child’s healthy lunch and your own. Make this a doing-it-together activity.
___ Advocate better meals at school cafeterias. Stick with it until policies are changed! There’s SO much junk food available in schools. Attend School Board meetings. Start making your voice heard!
___ Advocate for a zero homework policy in your child’s school. It is amazing that parents somehow think “homework” is constructive. As an educator, I say to my peers, “It’s your job to teach in school. It is not the parent’s job to teach your lessons or agenda at home.”
Home-time is for lessons parents want to teach their children and activities which build family relationships. It’s hard to do this when school “requires” this time, and it causes family burn-out … kids can’t have hours of work after being in school all day, and parents shouldn’t be gate-keepers after their full work-day, either. Nothing is more important than the lessons you believe your children need and the time to build your family connections.
___ Get your children creative toys and help them learn creative skills – painting, pottery, creative writing, wood -working, design, textile arts, engineering, science kits, botany and landscape design etc. There’s nothing worse for their minds than these video games and trashy TV programs, especially anything violent or degrading. Our subconscious minds cannot distinguish between “games” and “reality”, so all these violent games or silly cartoon violence still registers as real in our biochemistry. Get your children lots of good books, and read together with them, when your children are young, so they develop a life-long love of reading and understand the quietude and solace and imagination-journey it can afford them!
Make your time with your children “count”. They grow up so quickly, and there’s really only a short time when they are truly open to listening to you, anyway.
What is established or not established while they are in your care, will be with them forever. So please give them a positive start!
