Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

I’m starting a new series to showcase some of the holistic physicians I think you should know about. These doctors are Health-oriented and Prevention-oriented and that is a crucial shift in modern medical thinking.

Today, I am introducing Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD, renowned heart surgeon from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and host of his own Oprah-owned TV show. On that forum, he has started a 500 Calorie Supper Club.

It is just that aspect which I will address today. He’s got lots more to teach, but the idea of a small, controlled portion of food in the early evening, along with a small, controlled evening snack is important to start attending to.

Diabetics ravenous appetites often cause biochemically inappropriate actions, so controlled portions do help. But, unlike the recipes from American Diabetes Association, which hawk far too many refined carbs and grains, I think,  it is important to follow a few different guidelines, some of which Dr. Oz puts in place.

Now, as he has “invited” his viewers to contribute recipes, unless he has staff to validate a recipe’s worthiness, I don’t say to necessarily use the site’s recipes. But, I do think there are other sites that you can use — those oriented towards the Mediterranean Diet are a good start and Dr. Gourmet is a site to start at.

You cannot get away from the Calorie concept — as calories ARE an energy measurement of the food, and if you eat more calories than your body needs, it will store the extra as fat.

In diabetics, excess Insulin hormone also DEMANDS the calories be stored as fat, if they cannot enter the cell due to “insulin resistance” (which occurs in Type 2 diabetes). You may not even be eating excess calories and yet they will be stored as fat! That’s why “healing” your diabetes is so important, and we’ll be talking more about who and how in this series.

But, Dr. Oz gives us a starting point, for not eating too much — especially for that evening meal, which most of us eat too late in the day, that it is almost always made into fat.

Dr. Oz’s  Perfect 500 Calorie Dinner:
Protein = 200 calories
Fiber = 200 calories
Vegetables = 100 calories

Dinner Rule #1:  Portion Your Protein
You should be eating no more than 4 oz. of lean protein during any meal.  Your body cannot process anymore than that at one time, and as the most expensive part of the meal, you need to pay attention!

Measure your meat and fish portions against an everyday kitchen sponge or the palm of your hand – compare them side by side and by volume.  This will leave you with 4 oz. of protein and only 200 calories. Em: Fish may allow a slightly larger portion for the same calories – 6 oz. at most, or 2 eggs plus some nuts and seeds.

Em: Brazil nuts are important. Having 2 a day, as part of a snack gives you all-important selenium, which diabetics are usually low in. Almonds (find organic!) are also an important food.

Hint: Stay away from “prime” cuts of beef or pork; this only means they have more fat in them. Stick to lean cuts.

Em: I say it’s OK to have rib beef steak once in a while, if you do not want to be vegetarian, but only if it is from a grass-fed animal. The fats in grass-fed animals are generally healthy fats, although saturated fats (that’s not an oxymoron). Bison, goat and deer and other game are automatically leaner than beef, but you must read how to cook them without turning them to shoe-leather! Do NOT use farmed fish or shell-fish. And, be aware that vegetarians, especially those emphasizing raw, fresh vegetables have the best chance to impact their diabetes, hugely!

Dinner Rule #2: Fill Up on Fiber
You must get at least 5 grams of fiber with your dinner. Look to low-calorie, high-fiber foods to get you there. Think vegetables. You want to measure by volume – not weight. Use a 4 oz. ladle as your guide. For example, half a 4 oz. ladle-full of peas gives half of the desired fiber and about 100 calories.

Em:  But, as peas can be high glycemic as well as an acidic pH vegetable, balance them out with pH alkaline, high-fiber sweet potato for the other half of the ladle! This meal is still just minimal fiber at 5+ grams. The rest should come from a big salad of lightly steamed or raw veggies! Do not use grains, even whole grains! They are just not healthy foods. You can use quinoa to help and organic brown rice and wild rice is even better, for fiber.

Hint: The average American only eats 10-12 grams of fiber a day; the ideal amount for a healthy diet is 25+ grams. You just cannot expect your bowel to be healthy enough to remove toxins, if you don’t eat enough fiber! Stop self-poisoning yourself; get the junk out, daily.

Dinner Rule #3: Double the Veggies, Double the Spice
There are many benefits of a meal full of vegetables and spices, and they go way beyond just the idea of “flavor”. These foods are nutritional powerhouses and they harbor powerful antioxidants; can be used as digestive aids and as potent cancer-fighters.

Seasoning your meals with natural spices – instead of butters and fat – will help you conserve calories.

Em:  but Healthy fats ARE a necessary part of your diet! Use healthy fats (and some of these are very specific saturated fats) where you will get the most flavor and satisfa-ction, realizing it is so calorie-dense that only a tiny portion is used.  Use tiny (less than 1 teaspoon) portions of organic, extra-virgin coconut oil, extra-virgin, organic olive oil, organic hemp oil (no cooking or heating) and organic butter, along with wild, cold-water fatty fish (salmon and mackerel and cod) per meal. Fats MUST come from organic sources, as fats are where environmental pollutants are harbored, so they must be the least tampered with!

By doubling your portion of vegetables per meal, you’re only adding an additional 100 calories to your dinner.

Em:  and they will help satiate you. Frankly, except for all grains and for root vegetables, you can pretty much eat the rest of the vegetable kingdom as much as you want. Fruits are easily abused, so do not use them often. When choosing fruits, consider only apples, as they have chromium, needed by diabetics. But, you must buy organic apples so you can eat the whole fruit without peeling it! The chromium would get peeled off, otherwise, as it is just below the skin layer.

Em:  The most helpful spices are cinnamon for diabetics; then ginger and turmeric as anti-inflammatories; fresh onions for quercetin – source for a powerful anti-oxidant and lastly, garlic, thyme and oregano as anti-viral and anti-fungal foods.

How would you like to end up in jail for growing your own healthy herbs and vegetables and fruits and maybe for giving some to your neighbor? If you think it’s absurd and will never happen here in the Land of the Free, think again! The bill is in the US Senate now!

Congress is back in session after a late-summer recess, and one one of the first bills they will consider is Senate Bill 510.

This bill imposes draconian oversight on food production.

Undoubtedly fronted and financed by Big Pharma, Big Agriculture and Monsanto – the Frankenfood genetically-modified organism (GMO) chemical giant, it imposes extremely burdensome requirements on thousands of small farmers and food processors, and many of these may be who you depend on for your food, already. In fact, if you shop in Farmer’s Markets or stores showcasing local suppliers, these small food producers might be selling directly to you in your local area.

This bill easily could wipe out the small organic farmer.

But it could be much worse. It aims to take away your right to garden, and to grow your own food!

Conceivably, you could even become a criminal simply for growing herbs and giving them to your friend. We don’t have the full understanding yet of how far the “benevolent” government wants to go in “protecting your food”.

We have to stop this bill. But it won’t be easy.

After the big egg recall, recently, Americans are clamoring for protection by the government.Well, it was US Government inspections which failed to protect us. In looking at the records for that egg farm, there were hundreds of previous violations. Yes, we need to be protected against unscrupulous corporations, of all types, including the ones financing the Bill!

Dr. Robert Rowen, MD says he has” little doubt that the unseen pushers of bills like this are Big Agri which seeks to destroy the small farmer. But they’re not the only ones behind this horrible bill.

My sources say that this bill will remove our rights to own and store seeds and place that otherwise inherent right into the hands of the likes of GMO Frankenfood giant Monsanto.”

In the name of  (pseudo) “food safety”, the government could move to promote antibiotics, hormones and GMO Frankenseeds, likely wiping out the small conscious farmer” who uses safer, organic, natural seed.

Bills like this present a great danger to freedom.

Right now, the U.S. Code mandates that the government must find “credible evidence” before launching an attack on a food producer.

The authors of this bill and their minions want to replace that phrase with “reasonable probability.”

Hold on! You don’t need to be an attorney to see where this is heading. Who will be making that determination of “reasonable probability”? Some bureaucrat 3,000 miles away?

Dr. Rowen, MD continues – Might s/he decide that the raw milk which restored your health be removed for “reasonable probability”?

We certainly  do NOT need this bill.

Dr. Robert Rowen, MD states: “I’d rather take my chances on a rare outbreak of food bacteria than let the government control what comes to the food stores or what I personally can produce.”

He says, “I can treat the food-borne bacteria. I can’t easily treat pasteurization’s toxicity, Monsanto’s Frankenfood, the hormones, pesticides or other petrochemicals that are dumped into your food in the name of “safety.” ” That says it all.

This is our natural birthright – to garden, to forage and to store our seeds. It is fundamental to our independence and therefore to our Freedom!

Please call your senators and demand that they stop this bill dead in its tracks. Tell them you want to demand oversight on the use of chemicals, GMO Frankenfood, hormones and antibiotics, and that freedom for you and the small farmer is essential to our Liberty.

Look under US Government in your phone book for your US Senator’s local office, and write to their office at the Capital in Washington, DC by searching for the URL for your 2 senators, online.

If you are outside America, make sure your legislators are not helping these multinational corporations take over your lives, too!

The time is NOW. Don’t sit back and do nothing. Once lost, home-production and small farming will be outlawed!

Having the right to grow your own food is the most basic human right, and it is foundational for your Health, especially as a diabetic! Well cared for home-grown will always be best. Small farm production by a knowledgeable farmer, preferably organic, will always be next best. Both are far superior to the product produced by Big Ag’s factory farms. Period.

And, while you’re at it, tell your legislators to not allow high fructose corn syrup – one of the most deleterious substances in the food supply, and a cheap sweetener for Big Ag – to be allowed a name-change to benign-sounding “corn sugar”. What crafty S.O.B.s they are.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

This is Erev Rosh Hashanna, the evening when the Jewish New Year begins, at sundown, so I am writing my post “early”. Diabetics can easily get caught up in the traditional sweet foods, symbolic of desiring a “sweet and good” New Year, so here’s some guidance.

Also, it is important to remember that our body is the temple which the Lord gave us to care for, to house our divine spirit, so we should always “care” for our body-mind. How best to do that?

Certainly, diabetics and everyone else get mixed-messages from health providers and generally, the food industry only wants to provide “food” at the cheapest level with the biggest profit. So, the only protections you have are:

1) get educated (I’ll try to help.)

2) do more yourself (It definitely is possible to have a 3 season garden.)

For 5771 years, the Jewish people have followed dietetic laws which were meant to keep them safe and healthy. So, my whole life, I have been taught how food effects Health, and to respect the body the Lord gave me.

No-one is able to take perfect care of it. We ARE human, after all, but we must do an excellent job, most of the time. So, it may seem a strange post for a New Year celebration, but I am keeping up my lessons for you, as new things come every day to help with diabetes, for diabetics and their healthy friends and families, too.

Today, I want to teach you that there are healthy sugars which your body NEEDS, but they are not anything added to foods.

These special sugars are either made by your body, or they are provided naturally in especially-healthful foods. You need to know more.

A few years ago, I learned more on this topic via Dr. Emil Mindoa, MD in his book, “Sugars That Heal, The New Healing Science of Glyconutrients”.

The topic appeared in my main email box, again, last week, when Dr. Robert Rowen, MD wrote about Corvalen®.

Diabetes robs us of energy, and diabetics are historically “tired all the time” because energy-production, on a cellular level, is messed up.

This is what’s been happening on the research front:

___   Scientists have discovered a special type of sugar which  helps you get rid of most fatigue, at the root cause,  even if you’ve been suffering from debilitating fatigue for years.

( even if you’ve been unable to walk up the stairs, or walk to your mailbox without being out of breath AND / OR  even if you’ve been taking energy boosters like CoQ10 and L-carnitine, but without much improvement.)

This special sugar’s called ribose. Ribose is an unique sugar molecule because it has only 5 carbon molecules in its chemical structure, as opposed to the six carbons in common sugars, like glucose, sucrose and fructose.

Those 6-carbon sugars raise blood sugar levels, and cause your body to produce insulin.

But, unlike 6-carbon sugars, the 5-carbon sugar ribose does not raise blood sugar levels or cause your body to produce insulin. Instead, it helps you burn off more sugar, thereby producing cellular-energy and  getting rid of fatigue at the root cause.

___   As you may know, your cells contain tiny “power plants” called mitochondria, and in the past, scientists have seen that diabetics have smaller and fewer mitochondria in their cells. Their numbers are increased by muscle-building exercise.

These cellular power plants produce an energy molecule called ATP. ATP is the source of all bio-energy in your body – that is, the more ATP your cells produce, the more energy you have.

Conversely, when your ATP levels are low, you feel fatigued. To restore your energy and recover from fatigue, your cells must produce more ATP!

But the irony is that your cells need ATP to make ATP.

The less ATP you have, the less ATP your cells can make, so it’s a vicious cycle! Even “resting” doesn’t help you make “more” ATP, so if your ATP levels never recover to optimal levels, even with plenty of rest,  that’s why you’re tired all the time!

Fortunately, ribose can help recover ATP to optimal levels.

___   Ribose makes it much easier for your cells to produce ATP because ribose is an actual building block of ATP.

In fact, if you look at the chemical structure of ATP, above, you’ll see that ATP is made with a ribose molecule joined to two other molecules.

___   Ribose is usually made from glucose in your cells, but often diabetics have problems with glucose being able to efficiently enter their cell membranes. This is called “insulin resistance”.

Even healthy cells don’t convert the glucose to ribose immediately to ATP. Instead, your cells only do that when your body needs energy. Meanwhile,  the unused ribose is stored in your cells as a reserve energy bank-account.

___   The more ribose stored in your cells, the more ATP and energy your cells can produce, at any time.

You can get rid of fatigue at the root cause, by building a large pool of ribose in your cells, so that the mitochondria get a continuous supply of ribose to make ATP. This ensures you’ll never be low in energy, and not likely be fatigued again. Then, you have the energy to exercise and create better biochemistry and grow into a healthier status!

Ribose Has Been Proven to Work in Clinical Studies

___   For example, in one animal study, scientists took lab rats and clamped their blood vessels, in order to slow down blood flow which deprived the rats’ hearts of oxygen. This caused their ATP levels to plunge. Then scientists split the rats into two groups: one received ribose and one didn’t.

Result: The rats in the control group continued to have a serious decline in ATP levels, but, in contrast, the rats taking ribose saw their ATP levels go back to normal within 24 hours!

___   In another animal study, scientists found that ribose sped up the recovery of fatigued muscles by up to an amazing 430%.

They also found that even tiny amounts of ribose helped cells preserve energy.

___   In human studies, the British medical journal, “Lancet”, states in a  study of 20 men, researchers found that those taking ribose could exercise much harder before being fatigued. This has implications for diabetics, those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and for those with Fibromyalgia.

In a clinical study, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, medical director of the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers, gave 36 patients who suffered from fatigue a small bottle of ribose. He instructed them to take the ribose daily until the bottle was empty.

Result:  All of the patients saw a dramatic improvement in their energy levels, plus they also reported sleeping better, thinking more clearly and enjoying improved well-being.

Since these studies, Dr. Teitelbaum has recommended ribose for all of his patients who suffer from fatigue, and he has seen remarkable results on his patients.

___   In an interesting personal case-study published in the journal “Pharmacotherapy”, a veterinarian was forced to give up her practice due to her debilitating fatigue. When she heard about ribose, she decided to give it a try immediately. What happened? She was back to her operating room in 3 weeks, practicing normally without any fatigue!

But, being a very skeptical person, she didn’t believe that a “sugar” could have such a dramatic effect on her condition, so she stopped taking ribose. Within two weeks, her debilitating fatigue returned! Again, she was forced to leave her practice. However, when she resumed her ribose supplementation, her fatigue was gone again in days. So, once started, you may have to keep up your supplementation.

Maybe after a while, especially if you exercise (which helps to build more mitochondria), then you may be able to make supplement changes in amounts or frequency or both. But, maybe not, too. You’ll just have to see how well your own body does!

Ribose  also  Strengthens Heart Muscles and Improves Heart Functions

Having poor healthy-sugar energy-biochemistry may also explain why diabetes causes heart complications. After all, one’s heart is the biggest consumer of body energy. If you don’t make enough, heart and brain suffer first.  This energy which your heart needs comes from the same ATP which your heart cells must produce.

The problem is, when your heart is weakened, maybe due to aging or after a surgery or not enough energy-nutrients getting into the cells, so the heart cells are no longer able to produce enough ATP and thereby the energy your heart needs.

Without enough energy, the heart muscles then become even more fatigued, and they starve for even more energy. That’s why people with weakened hearts are so tired all the time.

The good news is that it’s possible to strengthen your heart muscles and improve your stamina with ribose!

Look at these studies:

___   In a German study, researchers took a group of heart patients, hooked them up to an echocardiograph to test their heart functions,  and then gave the patients ribose or a placebo for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, they re-tested the heart functions of all the patients.

Results:  The patients taking ribose definitely showed increased energy in their hearts. Their better-energized hearts filled and pumped more normally compared to the hearts of the control group. Not only that, the ribose group also reported enjoying a better quality of life.

Researchers didn’t stop there. They used treadmills to see how well the two groups performed. Compared to the control group, the ribose group could run for a much longer time before showing any signs of fatigue!

___   In yet another study, researchers took a group of heart patients and tested them on stationary bicycles.

Result: The patients taking ribose performed much better than the control group and the ribose group also showed stronger hearts, as measured by the amount of blood they pumped!

___   In still another study, researchers gave ribose to patients who had heart injury. And, what they found was amazing: the patients showed improved blood flow, improved oxygen-uptake and greater exercise capacity!

___   Mentioning one more study, researchers gave ribose to a group of 143 patients who had previous bypass surgery. The patients showed much greater hearts’ pumping ability compared those who had bypass surgery, but were not taking ribose.

By the way, there are no adverse side effects from taking ribose.

So I think you’re starting to see how ribose can really help you maintain a healthy heart, improve your stamina and put an end to your fatigue.

Diabetics have only a little leeway for error and indulgence under the current regimens, and so for those following traditional diabetic diet advice, this diabetic diet information is crucial. Mainstream diabetic diets place too much emphasis on food groups, especially carbohydrates, without enough emphasis on individual foods and more in-depth nutrition.

Dr. Robert Rowen, MD has alerted diabetics for the need to protect their eyes from damage from computer screen radiation. In fact, this is a  nutrient all computer users must take to protect their eyes.

Most educated people, worldwide, spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen.  Have you ever thought about the visual effects of light coming from computer screens?  Now there’s reason to do so!

A new  Chinese study says computer light can damage your eyes. Fortunately, the study also found a common nutrient which can protect your eyes from the damage.

In the study, the researchers followed 37 healthy subjects, aged 22 to 30 years old. Like most of us, all of the participants had regular exposure to computer screens.

The researchers randomized the participants into three groups, and then, for 12 weeks, they gave Group One 6 mg of lutein daily. They gave Group Two 12 mg daily. And Group Three got no lutein; they took a placebo.

At the end of the study, Group Two had the best visual acuity.They had taken the most lutein supplement.

Additionally, both groups taking lutein had better contrast sensitivity. (This simply means they can distinguish objects clearly from the background. They don’t blur together.)

Dr. Rowen said this  is the first report he’d seen that suggests that a computer display light might have a negative effect on vision. I have read about other issues about monitor exposure in the past.

He says that he can’t make any conclusion at this point, as it’s hard to determine from this study if the computer screen did the damage — or if the lutein just improved their eyesight.

In his practice, he  knows from patients taking Advanced Vision Formula, (from Advanced Bionutritionals brand) a supplement he recommends, which contains a whopping 15 mg of lutein, that this nutrient does improve eyesight.

Regardless of whether the computer screen causes damage or lutein improves eyesight (or some combination of the two), this study indicates that anyone who uses a computer regularly needs to take lutein, and as diabetic eyes are at especially high risk, for all kinds of reasons, this is a prudent step.

Also, I will mention that the mineral chromium, which is important in regulating blood sugar levels, additionally helps the small muscles in the eyes, so that mineral which is usually low in Western diets, is one to talk to your doctor about. Take a normal dose of 200mcg (micrograms) of chromium GTF (Glucose Tolerance Fator) supplement and monitor your blood sugars closely, as you may need less diabetic medication after being on chromium. Keep up the chromium regularly once you start.

If you’re eating a colorful, varied vegetable-based diet, there’s likely little cause for concern, as you’ll get plenty of lutein naturally. But, if youare under extra stress, already have worsening eyesight or spend long-hours in front of a computer monitor, then please add lutein to your daily regimen.

Cooked tomatoes are an excellent source of lutein, but don’t have it with lots of pasta! You can drink low sodium tomato juice just as well or make it into a tasty gazpacho – a cold summer soup with Spanish heritage. Here’s my friend Meg’s recipe.


Meg’s Summer Gazpacho

1 quart                    Organic Tomato Juice (use Knudsen), chilled

2                               Organic garlic cloves,  wash, peel and mince

1/2 to 1                  English cucumber, washed and diced small

1 handful               Organic, fresh cilantro – wash and chop finely

1/4 – 1/2               Organic red onion, washed, peeled, sliced thinly, then diced

dash                        Organic cayenne pepper

dash                        Organic, whole Celtic sea salt, if needed

dash                         Bragg’s Organic apple cider vinegar with enzymatic “mother”

optional                a sprinkle of organic dried seaweed like dulse or nori

Add the prepared vegetables, spices and dash of vinegar* to the cold juice and serve.

* organic apple cider vinegar with the “mother of vinegar” is important — Spectrum and Bragg’s are 2 brands which can qualify. Read labels carefully. Regular commercial vinegars, like Heinz, do NOT make an acceptable vinegar product. This specific vinegar is used because it becomes alkaline in the body and helps to “pH balance” the acidity of the tomatoes. The seaweed is also very alkaline, as is the cilantro. It is important to try to make most of your food alkaline.
