“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

Moving along as the year accelerates; Halloween blends into Diwali, Thanksgiving and all the end of the year holidays – Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s.  This is when people are often ready to try new foods and recipes and want to look and feel their best. So, it’s a good impetus for change. Use it!

Last time, I shared the “Dirtiest Foods” according to Environmental Working Group, a famous ecology watch-dog. This week, I want to share the Best, Cleanest Foods for Americans. The EWG has that list ready, too. Obviously, it’s best to save your food dollars to buy Organic to avoid the dirty foods, and in many cases, it’s relatively “safe” to eat conventionally-grown foods in this cleanest group, as factory agriculture doesn’t use pesticides on these plants as much, or in some cases, even at all.

Just remember:  “S/He who takes medicine and neglects diet wastes the skill of his doctors.” (Chinese Proverb)

And, while we’re at it, I want to tell you about another important watch-dog group which I hope you will support: the Cornucopia Institute.

Here’s the Cornucopia Institute’s chart showing which formerly “truly organic” brands have been acquired by Big Business – many times totally compromising the organics of the product. http://www.cornucopia.org/wp-content/themes/Cornucopia/downloads/OrganicT30J09.pdf

More links to help you make knowledgeable food choices and purchases at: http://www.cornucopia.org/who-owns-organic/

This is important, especially if you have already been buying organic brands for a long time. These business acquisitions are not mainstream knowledge, and, for example, when Kellogg’s bought Kashi, few of realized that Kellogg’s started using 100% GMO (genetically-modified organisms) in the grains used in Kashi! That’s NOT what I was buying Kashi for!  Cornucopia Institute alerted me to that.

The EWG also publishes a list of the 15 fruits and vegetables that are fine to eat when conventionally-grown. This is because the edible portions are protected by sturdy husks, hulls, and rind. These are generally not grown with systemic pesticides (as strawberries are). Here are their current picks…

Here’s the EWG “The Clean 15” List, with my comments:

1. Onions – this vegetable family, which also includes leeks, spring onions (scallions), shallots, ramps and garlic are all very healthy, mostly due to their sulfur component. Sulfur is a vital mineral and is deeply involved in your biochemistry. These compounds are best found in fresh onions and fresh garlic, so try to keep some of your allium-family veggies in raw state in pickles, sandwiches, burgers, salsas, spreads, hummus, cold soups (like gazpacho) etc., Let fresh garlic cloves get minced and then sit for 5 minutes in the air to “activate” the important heart-healthy and anti-biotic components before combining it with other foods.

2. Corn – GMO corn is rampant in our society. This Genetically-Modified corn is to be avoided, period, regardless of how it was grown. As far as “regular” corn, it is still a poor food. It is also a very high-carb food, which is largely best avoided.

3. Pineapple – this fruit is rich in Bromelain, a compound which helps digestion and also helps with pain and inflammation issues. Fresh pineapple is completely different from canned. Please do not use cooked fruits! Not only is the goodness compromised in the cooking, but even alkaline fruits become acid pH when cooked. Health depends on alkalinity, so keep your fruits fresh.

4. Avocado – the heavy skin on avocado protects it from the usual environmental toxins, so buying “regular” ones is OK if that helps your budget. Be sure to include avocados as they have some of the healthiest fats on the planet. If you have a latex allergy, consult with your allergist as to whether avocados and bananas are appropriate as they contain a natural latex.

5. Asparagus – this veggie is a wonderful, natural diuretic, and is a very pH alkaline food. With its short growing season, most of us will be eating frozen asparagus (not canned — which has barely any food value and the can linings of all canned food are suspected as most are BPA). For fresh asparagus, just lightly-steam it or use in stir-fry. Include it as a side or make into a warm or cold salad combined, or not, with other veggies. It combines well with lemon. Do not be surprised if you void more in the bathroom and that you smell asparagus as you do.  This is also a good fiber source.

6. Sweet peas – this is a dense carbohydrate food, so it must be used in moderation. As peas have fiber, you can deduct those carbs from the total carb count. Peas can be eaten raw or steamed and are great in legume salads to provide color and a touch of natural sweetness. They go well with cheese in salads. If you are using the pea pod, then buy organic peas. Peas in their pod make could “dippers” and scoops for healthy bean, cheese or egg spreads. Pea shoots are another option and as with all sprouts, they are endlessly useful, especially in salads and sandwiches. Find the pea sprouts in good health stores or good Asian markets.

7. Mangoes – this is a fabulous fruit, with good fiber profile which helps to deduct from its total carb load. It is very sweet, naturally, so can be used in small amounts to substitute for less healthy sweetners in recipes. It has excellent enzymes, Vitamin A and if used in small amounts, then enjoy!

8. Eggplant – this is a very alkaline vegetable and is evidently less in need of pesticides in facory agriculture. I do not follow the usual instructions to “salt” eggplant to get the bitterness out. These slightly bitter compounds help to keep it alkaline pH. They do not taste bad! If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you probably should avoid all nightshade vegetables, at least for a while. Eggplant, tomatoes, chilis, bell peppers, potatoes (white, red, yellow)  and tomatillos are all nightshades. Eggplantis usually cooked, but it does not have to be fatty like most recipes tell you to do byfrying it. Try it as a dip like Baba Ghanouj, instead.

9. Cantaloupe – I don’t recommend cantaloupe at all. It’s skin is a mold source, even if microscopic. It is impossible to get off all the mold spores in that web of wrinkled skin! You cut the melon and bring the mold to the pieces you eat. Only eat smooth skinned melons. Wash them well, then skin them and eat ALONE with no other kinds of foods (even other fruits) for 20 minutes. They are SO alkaline that nothing else can be digested properly if eaten with them.

10. Kiwi – this little gem is an Omega-3 essential fatty acid source. It originally grows in the coldest part of China and it’s natural anti-freeze provides us Omega-3s, those wonderful sources of heart health also found in the fish from frigid waters, like salmon, cod, herring and more. It’s also a good Vitamin C source. Apart from tasting great, these always look pretty on a plate and are good for young children to eat, too.

11. Cabbage – cabbage is nutritious, but it is problematic if you have thyroid issues. Discuss this with your physician. For others, cabbage and its cousins have less interference because commercial growers cut-off so many of the most nutritious outer leaves. So, yes, commercial cabbage is relatively safe to eat, but I still buy organic cabbage, especially Savoy, to get those precious outer leaves. Even better: grow your own!

12. Watermelon – of all the melons, this is the most healing. It’s bright red color is indicative of even more nutrition than the deep yellows of other melons and even the seeds are nutritious (if broken free of their coat). Just make sure that the skins are washed well before you cut open the melon. But, I still buy organic watermelon (and you must if you are going to process the rind into pickles).

13. Sweet potatoes – these nutritional powerhouses are not potatoes, botanically. They are from a different family, so people with rheumatoid arthritis, who need to avoid the Nightshade vegetable family (includes regular potatoes), should be able to tolerate sweet potatoes. The key for diabetics to use sweet potatoes is to make sure that they are the sweetest thing in  the meal, without adding any extra sweetner. It’s just not needed. And, sweet potatoes can help other things taste sweet, along with stevia, as a safer way to add sweetness, rather than depending on dates, applesauce and other ploys. Stevia and tiny amounts of real, organic maple syrup are the best sweetners for diabetics. Agave, corn syrup, rice syrup, artificial sweetners and honey are not. Organic molasses is possible, in tiny amounts, but I find its flavor is not compatible with much. Yes, I used to recommend agave, but now I know better.

14. Grapefruit – this is one of my favorite fruits, especially Ruby Reds, but many people should not be eating grapefruit because of the medications they take. Confirm if this is an issue for you; ask your pharmacist. Grapefruit is a wonderful alkaline pH fruit, with plenty of Vitamin C and plant anti-osidants. Just remember, people with diabetes should NOT be using fruit juices. Use the whole fruit and be sure to get some of the surrounding white membrane, as that is where other nutrients, like rutin (which helps vascular system) are found. The same membrane qualities are found in other citrus.

15. Mushrooms – this is a problematic food for me as Dr. Robert O. Young, PhD – microbiologist whose pH view of disease and health is valid, I believe, says to avoid fungus. Asians, especially, have many healing mushrooms, so those are the ones I limit myself to. These include: shitake, maitake, reishi and others that a naturopathic or Traditional Chinese Medicine physician will recommend.

I sincerely hope that this list has been helpful. I truly hope that you will support the Cornucopia Institute with its important work. They are presently fighting on behalf of all of us to insure that Big Agribusiness does not water-down the meaning and processes behind the term “organic”. They represented all of us at the USDA National Organics Standards Board meetings recently. Hopefully they were able to prevail.

Please make Organics an integral part of your Health. You can’t spend your money more wisely. Target the foods that need that protection the most, and help your children avoid the chemically-laden food list at all costs. Also, eat in season. This not only helps you spend your food dollar wisely, but helps your body get the foods it expects, instinctively, and that it needs.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

I am trying to catch-up, as lots of things have been happening in my life and I want you well-equipped with information and healthy foods as we transition seasons and head for Holiday Times.

As Food is Your Medicine, it’s important to get the Best! The Environmental Working Group lists the Best and Worst Farmed foods. Here they are for 2011, with my comments.

The new “Dirty Dozen”: Avoid these if conventionally-farmed, at all costs, and for the nutritious foods which you don’t want to miss, then use only the ORGANIC farmed versions.

1. Apples – these fruits are highly nutritious, but they should only be used as a whole, raw, organic fruit. Making them into juice concentrates too much of the large fructose content, and cooking changes the fruit completely (apart from the fact, then when cooked, most people remove the skins). It is only just beneath the skin that the most-healthy nutrient in apples hides. It’s the mineral chromium, which is needed for blood sugar control. If one was eating a totally-natural hunter-gatherer diet, then probably “one apple a day would keep the medicine-wo/man away”. Apple sauce is prolematical being cooked and in the huge portion (meaning equivalence of several apples) which people are likely to give themselves or their children (even worse). Make sure to wait for this year’s Fall Harvest of apples. Those stored in the supermarkets’ coolers are long-since useless.

2. Celery: It’s a sneaky addition to the Bad List. I have a huge celery plant in my back-yard and I see NO reason for it to be pesticided like conventional commercial agriculture does. Celery is the second-ranked dirty food. It’s critical to use organic celery (and only CRISP stalks), as celery helps our bodies relax from tensions and stresses (it’s called a nervine). If the celery goes limp, do NOT use it. Celery should be used raw in salads and the “strings” provide good fiber to slow down other carbs.

3. Strawberries Every kid loves strawberries, so it’s shameful that conventional ones are the 3rd. most dangerous fruit thanks to farming in America. Your country may be different, so check it out!  This berry has lots of anti-oxidants and vitamins, so do buy it, just buy Organic! Figure that unless you buy Organic products, that strawberry ice-cream and strawberry jam will have filthy conventional berries in them. Stupid manufacturers.

4. Peaches: These fruits belong to the same botanical family as apples and plums. They are nutritious but also have a lot of fructose, so should be used sparingly. Fructose is not good for diabetics and everyone is affected by fructose turning-off your satiety signals and piling on belly-fat. Generally, vegetables are MUCH healthier than fruits and fruits should be used in extreme moderation.

5. Spinach: It’s not just the event a few years ago where birds or roaming animals pooping on spinach was not washed-off well enough, causing an E. coli outbreak. That can happen to any raw food. It is your responsibilty as the consumer to make sure that “Triple-washed” spinach (or any thing else) is washed again in your own kitchen. Some leafy greens are harder than others to “wash” commercially. You are the final inspector. Spinach is nutritious enough to bother with this, but as it also has a hefty-dose of oxalic acid, it is not a main-line green. Just add a few extra leaves to your salad made from other greens (like romaine, cilantro, parsley and kale — all of them Organic).

6. Nectarines: Nectarines are a hybrid – a cross between peaches and plums, They have the best-of-both. But, unfortunately, in America, they are pesticided and chemically-fertilized too much. So, buy Organic nectarines, only in season, and get the benefits of a lower fructose fruit (as plums are lower in fructose) with a hint of the higher Peach.

7. Grapes:Don’t get dragged-in to the out-of-season grapes! Most are being farmed in countries which do not have strong laws regarding pesticides! Apart from that, it’s always wiser to eat-in-season. Your body needs different foods in different seasons and expects them to have their nutrients, in the right proportion and form, to carry you through. This is especially true of winter foods, which are denser, with their own array of nutrients. Whereas warm-season foods have much higher water-content to help slake your thirst (and a nutrient profile rich in electrolytes to help compensate for mineral loss when sweating). Just make sure you eat in season. Research the proper season when foods will normally be harvested in your country and region. Organic grapes (especially red ones) are a highly-nutritious food which should be used once every few days, in season, in moderate quantities, as there’s lots of fructose in them, too.

8. Sweet bell peppers: Peppers (hot or sweet), potatoes, tomatoes, tomatillos and cape gooseberry are all part of the nightshade botanical family.  Sweet potatoes are from a different family. Nightshades can cause inflammation and a biochemical cascade resulting in arthritis for some people. They are foods to get off of for up to 6 months and see if you are doing better. If you still want to re-introduce them, do it one by one, at least a week in between each and pay attention to your body’s signals. Make sure any of these foods is always Organic! Peppers have lots of Vitamin C and the red ones have Vitamin A, too. But, you must make sure that any of these foods are not secretly undermining your precious Health.

9. Potatoes: Same as for Peppers, above, along with the fact that potatoes must always be Organic, scrubbed, unpeeled, in small portions (like 1 small to medium potato) and eaten always with a healthy fat in the meal (avocado, organic coconut oil, organic hemp oil, organic olive oil, organic butter, organic ghee).  On their own, potatoes have a very high glycemic index and trigger too much insulin; healthy fats slow them down. Conventional potatoes are also doused in fungicides after harvest, and I am not sure that even peeling them helps you avoid the chemical. And, the most important nutrition is just under the skin, so you would be just getting a big carb load without much nutrition to be peeling them.

10. Blueberries: They are a divine gift — easy to grow, delicious, and most importantly they are highly nutritious, but NOT if conventionally farmed! Only get Organic berries or grow your own, Organically. The plants require very little attention. Eat them raw. You want to get every iota of goodness and cooking always destroys nutrients. Use them in fruit salad, smoothies etc. They are a medium-range fructose fruit.

11. Lettuce:  I suspect that this Warning applies to all commercially-grown conventional lettuce. However, when you buy Organic lettuce, you not only have a safer product, but you will have access to a much-wider choice of green leafies — lettuces and all sorts of other plants — like those in “Spring Mix” etc.  Organic Romaine lettuce is MUCH more nutritionally-sound than any iceberg lettuce (which is a total waste of your hard-earned dollar, as iceberg has almost NO nutrients, at all). Enjoy trying oak-leaf lettuce, frisee, endives, orach, radicchio, and all the other wonderful “greens”.  but only in Organic or non-sprayed form. Leafies are the best source of B vitamins, used to allay stress and also they contain wonderful alkaline minerals you need for bio-electricty and to quell inflammatory chemistry.

12. Kale/collard greens: Kale is SO effective in bringing up the nutrients in the soil that, when it is used in fields which have had toxic and too many pesticides thrown on them, kale is used to “detoxify” the fields (but then those companies still sell the very-toxic, conventional kale!). So, you can only use Organic Kale, for sure! Kale is a nutritonal powerhouse, and if I could only choose one vegetable, this would be it! Those on Coumadin / Warfarin therapy can use it, but it just has to be at a consistent serving and use, so it can be accounted for.

The EWG also publishes a list of the 15 fruits and vegetables that are fine to eat when they are conventionally-grown. I’ll share that with you next time.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

Still trying to catch-up after my California trip! Dr. David Brownstein, MD – a long-time holistic physician from Michigan –  sounds the alarm bell and we all need to listen! It’s about how your thyroid’s health is connected to diabetic health, heart health, brain health and more!

First thing — watch Dr. Brownstein’s video at: Dr. Brownstein Explains Low Thyroid and there’s an important FREE OFFER, too. You only pay only $5.95 for shipping and get a DVD and 2 books and 2 editions of his newsletter (I think)! Great help for a fabulous price.

And then read another 2 of his newsletters at the following links!
Diabetics and Low Thyroid – 59 Diseases  — and many of these diseases are: 1) life-threatening and 2) avoidable when you know how.

I’ve discussed the importance of the 2 forms of the mineral Iodine many times — now, Dr. Brownstein connects all the dots and shows you what happens when you are malnourished by lack of Iodine, as most people are in the world, now — either due to poor soils, poor food access or poor food choices. Read  Diabetics and Iodine – A Critical Nutrient.

I found all this information very clear and have taken the free offer myself. I try to keep up with thyroid issues as I think it is a multi-generational problem in part of my family. Even I learned new things from Dr. Brownstein and I expect the 2 books will be worthwhile, too.

Do make sure that you learn all you can about hypothyroidism as low thyroid can be causing or contributing to your diabetes!

While you are waiting for more of his information:

___    start eating sea vegetables and edible seaweeds – they are Nature’s blood-thinners and are a great alkaline source of unpolluted Iodine. (If you are on blood-thinners, consult your physician. You can still eat these, but the dose of meds may need to be adjusted.).

___   You can make sure that you erase man-made foods with nitrates, as nitrates wreck our thyroid!

For example – breads are “fortified” with the synthetic B vitamin Thiamine Mononitrate (make sure your flours, pastas, dry cereals and doughs [and vitamin pills] do not have it! Use natural whole grains, instead.)  Do not use processed meats, sausages, bacon which have nitrates added. Check labels on other processed foods.

___   Iodized salt is NOT a good Iodine source! (Dr. Brownstein explains why it is not). Instead, use a complete, whole sea-salt like Celtic Salt from Brittany, France  OR Eden-brand Sea Salt.

___   Avoid most baked goods, dry cereals, pasta and pizza doughs which are literally killing you, for a second reason. Because of a changed-process in industrial baking made in the 1970s, Bromine was added instead of the long-used Iodine.  Business hasn’t changed even though the problems with Bromine came to light a long time ago.  Sodas also contain a form of this killer, Bromine.

More when I can!

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

No matter what people think, there’s not been enough medical testing of drugs that enter into the marketplace, especially recently, and much of the testing has been either paid for or conducted by the drug companies themselves. Then, it’s been “rubber-stamped” by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration – America’s federal governmental  ‘health watch-dog’ agency). That’s why there has been an increasing number of reported problems with various drugs, for various conditions, from various companies. Universities and other government agencies and even health workers are now investigating and revealing more problems.

Health reporter, Alice Wessendorf, mentions the following alert:

You may “… be the victim of a commonly prescribed drug combination that’s now been found to cause blood-sugar spikes. And getting in this drug-side-effect crossfire is not as unlikely as you may think, since experts estimate that anywhere between 500,000 and 1 million people in the United States alone are on the two-drug combo.

It was Stanford University researchers who accidentally made the shocking discovery when they were poring over the data from the FDA’s adverse-event-reporting database (AERS). And they were concurrently combining that data-search with the electronic medical records from 3 medical institutions.

Unexpectedly, the Stanford group found  a significant number of patients who were on the common antidepressant Paxil along with the common cholesterol-lowering drug Pravachol had unexpected, unexplained spikes in their blood-glucose levels.

And the really frightening part is that patients very well may not have even known it because there was not a single report of the unusual levels was found in the AERS database!

It wasn’t until the researchers bumped the AERS data up against the electronic medical records that the relationship reared its ugly head, and it highlights the problem that this information, as it comes in, needs to be investigated, not just “archived”.

The archived data showed that 135 nondiabetic patients on the dangerous drug combo had an average increase in their blood-glucose levels of 19 mg/dl. Disturbingly, that’s more than enough of a jump to push a nondiabetic person right on over into the diabetes zone.  So, arguably, there are people “diagnosed” as diabetic, who aren’t really; they’re sympromatic because of this medicine combination.

And now, what about the real diabetics, already-diagnosed-ahead-of-combo use? What about anyone for whom maintaining blood-sugar control is critical? The Stanford researchers were able to identify 104 of them, too, on the two drugs who had on average a shocking spike of 48 mg/dl!

Just to be sure of the ‘drug connection to blood sugar spikes’,  they tested the drugs individually and then in combination on prediabetic lab mice. The Stanford group saw a dramatic spike in the sugar levels of the mice that were given both Paxil and Pravachol together—from around 128 mg/dl to a staggering 193 mg/dl.

If you happen to be on these two drugs —  especially if you’re diabetic, then run —don’t walk — to your doctor’s office and ask him about getting off them ASAP (now)!

You know I always favor the most natural approach (as does Alice) and she suggests your physician consider  alternatives like vitamin D, fish oil and exercise to ameliorate these conditions instead of the aforementioned drugs or to lessen the dose needed of the drugs.

It’s not as if these drugs have been shown to be all that helpful any way.  One of the drugs has already been revealed to likely be no better than a sugar pill and to possibly cause thickening of the arteries and the other one to most likely be unnecessary.  Your goal should be to get off them regardless of their effects on your blood-sugar level. Discuss how with your physician.

Lots of Food for Thought here. Make sure you act if you are taking this drug combo. You may even find out you’re not diabetic after all.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

Alzheimer’s disease (Dementia) is known as Diabetes Type 3, because science has found that our brain produces insulin for its own use, in order to keep brain cells alive. What can we learn from this to help Types 1 and 2, and what common synthetic vitamin food additive kills brain cells?

Dr. Mary Newport, MD is interested in us getting a quota of organic, extra-virgin coconut oil daily, even though it usually gets an undeserved bad-rap as a “saturated” fat (it’s the only vegetarian saturated fat).

Mary is a firm advocate and researcher about using the essential medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil to build and re-build brain cells.

We’ll find out how that is potentially linked to insulin-resistance and diabetes further down.

As a neonatologist, she studies and is concerned about building fetal, newborn and toddler brains properly, and polyunsaturated fats DON’T(These are oils like safflower, corn, “vegetable”, canola and peanut.)

Brains are 70% fat.  But they must be Omega-3 fats (from cold water fish like salmon, mackerel or herring OR from ground flax seed or from hemp seed) AND the medium-chain fatty acids which coconut oil supplies better than anything else (except mother’s milk).

In my archive, you’ll find many articles about coconuts because I believe them to be a foundational human food, and they are quite alkaline pH.

Dr. Newport also reports and builds on the work of Dr. Suzanne de la Monte.

After being spurred on by Dr. de la Monte’s work, Dr, Newport also got involved in further research on medium-chain fatty acids, as her brilliant husband began to suffer from Type 3 Diabetes (Dementia) (Alzheimer’s).

She helped to turn his condition around.  As long as he stays on her coconut oil protocol, daily, he’s been “stabilized” and has even partially-reversed his dementia.

In Diabetes Type 3, from Dr. de la Monte’s work, Mary learned that our brains make insulin, too, for their brain cells’ own use! Because brain cells need critical, constant fuel, when its cells cannot biochemically get what they need, a whole “other” chemistry kicks in, one based on burning medium-chain fatty acids.

This other kind of biochemistry can also be part of what may help some people to jump-start themselves out of “insulin resistance” (Type 2 diabetes), but you must be under the care of a knowledgeable practitioner.

Dr. Newport’s doses and guidelines for coconut oil use for Type 3 Diabetes are at Dr. Newport’s Research Site. Maybe her protocol can fill in some missing parts of your biochemistry, too.

Dr. Suzanne de la Monte’s research also sheds light on a nefarious culprit destroying your brain cells (and more), everyday. What is this additive? It’s synthetic Vitamin B1  (called Thiamin Mononitrate) (T.M.). You will find it  on vitamin labels, and especially on grain product labels (because it’s added when the natural, nutritious germ is stripped away in refining).

I have known for decades NOT to use nitrated foods.

Always read labels. When kids love hot-dogs or bacon or salami, the only way to help them be safer, is to have them drink a Vitamin C juice (like orange juice) with them, to ameliorate the carcinogenic potential for stomach cancer and other cancers due to the nitrates. Now, all this seems to go MUCH further.

Nitrites and nitrates, found in many processed foods, are nitrosamine compoundsDr. Newport says that “could very well explain the epidemics of Alzheimer’s, autism, diabetes, MS, Parkinson’s and ALS, along with other neurodegenerative diseases that have insulin resistance, decreased glucose uptake as part of the process“.

These diseases have all been on the increase as processed foods have taken over the bulk of our diets (for many people), especially as food budgets decrease as prices increase, and fresh foods become disproportionally expensive (due to the US Federal Government giving farm subsidies to the wrong types of crops).

So, I went looking at the bread labels of what I usually use. I try to use either: 1) sourdough whole wheat bread (as sour-dough process helps to negate the tendency to wheat sensitivity), 2) whole grain spelt bread, or 3) whole grain “organic “multigrain” breads.

Only the organic, most-expensive whole-grain breads had NO “replacement” synthetic vitamins, so were Thiamin Mononitrate free, relying instead on the real vitamins still in the whole-grain germ.

Next, I started looking at cookies, crackers, pretzels, and cereals — usually I don’t have them in the house, but my grandchild (at nearly 2) loves these kinds of easy-to-hold-myself  “foods”. Sure enough, any mainstream brand I looked at in the store had Thiamin Mononitrate. The health-food store brands that I had  at home were fine! (Note: Newman’s Own makes Spelt Pretzels, and my 3 pretzel fiends love them! They’re Thiamin Mononitrate free.)

Using white flour is a no-no, as it has Thiamin Mononitrate and other synthetic vitamins to “replace” all the good nutrition totally lost while milling it to “white”. Some beers, whiskeys etc. ALSO HAVE T.M.

The last thing we want is for any child to succumb, as millions of children are, to autism, in an absolute epidemic with devastating consequences for the future – for families and the nation. And, Dr. Newport thinks the autism epidemic is because so many children’s foods have Thiamin Mononitrate in them — even baby formulas and baby solid foods do! Maybe this also creates Type 1 Diabetes in children. I hope researchers look at this!

Cheap supplement. Expensive consequences!

It doesn’t seem that anyone is looking yet as to whether Thiamin Mononitrate has also been killing insulin-producing cells in our pancreas, just as many scientists accuse cow milk does, to create Type 1 diabetes. How long will it take for research? Who knows!

Meanwhile, if Thiamin Mononitrate does this in much-harder-to-reach insulin producing brain cells, super-protected by the blood-brain barrier, hitting our pancreas is a proverbial ‘piece of cake’. Easy peasy.

From now on, I will encourage everyone feeding my grandchild to read labels and give NO synthetic Vitamin B1 or any other nitrate. Dr. Newport says that Thiamin Mononitrate may also be the reason for so many born-normal children suddenly becoming autistic not long after they start “solid” food (and maybe it is more likely if their formula also contained the synthetic vitamin) (at least my grandchild has been nursed for 2 years).

While natural Vitamin B1 is water-soluble (you will urinate out any excess), the synthetic form,  Thiamin Mononitrate,  is fat-soluble, so it is hoarded and evidently the excess can also cause these troubles, over time!

Make sure that you start to include Organic, extra-virgin coconut oil (OEVCO) in your diet, daily. It needs to be used combined with organic, extra-virgin olive oil (OEVOO), for cooking, as coconut alone does not have a high-cooking temperature before it would “smoke”. NEVER use an oil which has “smoked” as that has produced harmful substances.

Use OEVCO to garnish soups, in smoothies, on sandwiches as spread, in dips and one-time use salad dressings. As I understand what I’ve read, OEVCO does NOT increase arterial blockage, even though it’s a saturated fat (it’s vegetarian). But, you need to factor it into your daily fat calories, which means cutting back on some other fat source (preferably a polyunsaturated one).

Don’t be a epidemic statistic early in life OR late in life. Lack of information creates problems for people’s Health. And, on the Thiamine Mononitrate issue, this is just one more example where poor food processing and “cheap” “replacement” additives are getting by government regulators and therefore compromising our Health for corporate profit!

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

This post contains helpful health information and the request for some advocacy to support a particular health-oriented Bill in the US House of Representatives! Read on.

First, the legislation, as you need to contact your Congressional delegate. Read about the situation and go to the letter-to-respond site, below.

From our friends at The Life-Extension Foundation: Thanks for alerting me!

April 5, 2011, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the US House of Representatives. It’s  called the Free Speech about Science Act (H.R. 1364). This landmark legislation protects the public’s right-to-know by protecting basic free speech rights as they pertain to the current censorship of science.

The Bill enables the natural health community to share peer-reviewed scientific findings with the public – which will help introduce the public to efficacious therapies and natural products for alternative (and mainstream) physicians to use or for self-administration from a position of educated choice.

The Free Speech about Science Bill has the potential to transform medical practice by educating the public about the real science behind natural health, instead of it being demonized by an actually organized, self-serving campaign, especially from an online group (Quackwatch) that serves no-one’s best interest. It’s been exposed that some of those people have links to Big Pharma, in varying degrees.

The Bill will have opposition:

___   from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) (which has many members increasingly “muffled” or others with deep ties to Big Pharma) – who will oppose it since the Bill restricts their ability to censor the dissemination of published scientific data.

___   from drug companies fearing competition from natural health approaches based on diet, dietary supplements and lifestyle. These pharmaceutical companies show they are motivated by self-interest and with their “deep-pockets”, they have held Congress captive. Just the fact there is a courageous Bill is real progress. Now you have to boost individual law-makers to have the courage to pass it!

___   and possibly from mainstream medical associations, who pipe-their-own-tune as they desire, but constantly want to “muffle” others, including their own members!

The public,  wants and needs access to credible information they can use to make wise dietary and Health choices. Please don’t let any special interest groups stop this bill.

Here’s where to write your Congressional delegate. Do it for yourself, and more importantly, do it for your children and future generations. The world needs people to be proactive about their Health as dis-ease and poor health is spreading because of ignorance. Society needs this information to turn-things-around before poor Health robs us individually and as a nation.

Next, Magnesium is critically depleted in most Westerners, especially Americans, and even more so within diabetics, anywhere!

Please read my previous article about MAGNESIUM
– click on link.

Among other critical functions, magnesium is needed for over 300 enzymes, your nerves and your bio-electric cellular ion-transport system. Many of your immune system cells require magnesium to fight for you effectively. Read the article above!

Very few scientific studies utilize women as subjects, but women are at risk for cardiac death because many doctors aren’t monitoring them well-enough, preferring to think it’s mostly a male problem.

Well, I had a savvy, otherwise-healthy friend keel-over and die, when she could afford the best care. So, here again, take this study into your doctor and let him watch over you without thinking you’re being a hypochondriac.

The Life Extension Foundation Magazine reports:

“Greater dietary intake of magnesium and higher plasma magnesium levels are associated with a reduced risk of sudden cardiac death in women, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  It’s long [been] known for its anti-arrhythmic properties in cellular and experimental models … .

Scientists examined dietary intake data collected from more than 88,000 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study. During 26 years of follow-up, 505 cases of sudden cardiac death occurred. In a case-control analysis, the scientists compared plasma magnesium levels between 99 sudden cardiac death cases and 291 control patients. Higher dietary intake of magnesium and higher plasma magnesium levels were associated with lower risks of sudden cardiac death.

These findings suggest that increasing magnesium intake and plasma levels may protect women against sudden cardiac death by preventing abnormal heart rhythms.”  Dr. E. Wagner, MD reported.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

I cannot express the grief I feel about the senseless carnage which took the life of this gracious, bright and loving child in Tuscon, Arizona last week. I will miss you, Christina Taylor Green, and mourn all the good you could have contributed to the world, if given the chance.

A few days ago, your Spirit returned to Source from whence you came; today, your Earth Mother holds you close. Now safe. Rest. Your job is done. Now, it’s our turn.

As I am trained in Psychology and Education, I continually read the articles about how the mentally-ill and mentally-vulnerable are not being attended to (starting in the ’80s with Reagan), and without a caring and effective life-line, this young man’s poor choices can be the senseless result.

Tonight, CBS News anchor, Katie Couric, reports that 30% of Americans have some form of mental illness, 5% of them with severe cases. I think a lot of this is from decades of casual drug use among many Americans – parents (drug use before, during and after – affecting genetics and parenting skills), sometime-to-be parents and kids.  And the other major source: decades of poor nutritional choices among even more people with jeopardized or broken genetics and / or biochemical imbalance as a result. And, for some, it is poverty which causes poor nutrition, but it can have the same results.

In this incident, so many lives needlessly lost, and mostly because the talking heads – official and otherwise – have raised the level of disrespect and unsupported rhetoric SO high.

They had better be reversing this in the halls of Congress, the halls of FOX News, radio chat shows and in the churches and organizations of hate and vitriol.

Let’s see statesmanship, civil and honest discourse which attempts to find common ground and compromise; let’s aim for a centrist agenda. All that counts is the Good of the Nation, not corporations, special interests, power-mongers. It needs to be central and all that is attended to. Get to The People’s Business, only.

And, healthcare reform needs to be settled, fairly, now!

For, without access to preventative care (and at a fair fee which people can afford), the nation cannot have a citizenry with a healthy, trim and  vigorous body,  and with a mentally-stable, well-nourished mind. This nation’s destiny is at-risk in ever-increasing increments, from within and outside our borders, and we are turning into weaklings.

Whether it be the drug-cartel violence at the Mexican border and the havoc their product produces in our vulnerable young people, while society is ineffectually fighting it OR whether it’s China with their aggressive, ready, million-man army (and it’s successful recent missile tests), the world is very scary at the moment.

We can reverse ALL this if we work together and don’t disengage.

Each of us has to become an instrument of positive change, like Gabe Zimmerman and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords were trying to be, and like the interested, involved citizens, who attended her Meet “N’Greet “Congress on your Corner”.

Our prayers are with all the families.

As balm for Christina’s family, John and Roxanna Green, their 11 year old son Dallas and extended family, as well as for the others personally touched by the larger tragedy, we pledge this as a time for reflection.

Figure out what you can do to make the world around you a better place.

Start small and keep working. No endeavor is insignificant. Just start. And, hold your elected officials’ feet-to-the-fire. Pay attention to what they are and what they are not doing on your behalf and the Nation’s behalf.

Things just can’t be business-as-usual because, for decades, the People’s Business has NOT been done!

Listen to and READ many sources. Get many points of view. Then, make your own opinion. Next, work to make your voice heard.

At the same time, settle on a set of steps as to how you can make your own and your family’s “lot” better if these officials act, and even more if they don’t act!

The American Dream is, at best, on hold. Whether we can speak of it in a hopeful Future, depends on us seeing the return of a vibrant, reasonable-size middle-class. THAT  will determine the fate of our country.

And, in turn, this time, the middle-class has to help those below them better than they did before.  And, all of us need laws to put the top 1% – 2% of the wealthy on notice, that the land and money and power grab is over.

Get Campaign Reform in place and that cuts off the power-mongering immediately!

When this Congress and this Executive can kowtow to special interest and pressure from the powerful to enact tax-cuts for the wealthy, giving away another 800 billion dollars of now uncollectable tax money from the wealthy, officials are left with unacceptable choices for making “cuts”.

Only trying to tear-down so-called “entitlements” for those who paid into these systems and now need them OR for the most-needy, least healthy of us who need the services is a heinous, unfair plan to be thinking of as the source of fiscal re-balancing.

And, for the military spending-cuts, their wisdom remains to be seen.

But, clearly, the wealthy 1%-2% are NOT paying their share and have undue influence while owning more than 50% of the wealth of this wealthiest nation in the world. And, no, the science shows that their wealth does NOT “trickle-down” nearly as much as it should. They actually don’t stimulate the economy with their money.

America needs to be better on all levels and I think her citizens must insist upon it and contribute their own actions to Positive Change.

So what, that Congress voted to extend the tax-cuts for the wealthy. Go back, re-visit the issue and re-craft the Law. That’s where huge change needs to begin.

And, the Federal government needs to make sure that the states don’t go under. The purse is too unbalanced in Federal favor. The states are the one’s best able to deliver what their citizenry needs, and several are destitute, or on the brink.

More than 30 states cut their mental health budgets, by a total of 2 billion dollars, and that’s part of why there is a lack of treatment options. It opens the chance for these tragic occurrences, and people have to be willing to alert authorities to those who are behaving irrationally, with a strict set of published criteria, so that the system is not abused.

Nothing is cast in stone, but when people are “hurting” as desperately as many people are, without acknowledgment that means anything concretely, then more trouble can happen.

So, let’s make sure we are walking in a better direction. It starts with each of us. Tell your Congress that you want the tax-cuts for the wealthy revisited and that you want real healthcare reform, with the public option as a central underpinning. Hop to it!

I received an email recently, and part of it said:

“They say it takes a minute to find a special person,
an hour to appreciate them,
a day to love them,
but then an entire life to forget them.”

That’s how I feel about you, Christina. May your Light always shine in our hearts, and may we be worthy of that.
