“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!”(TM)

This information is SO important for everyone, especially diabetics, that I have made it a 4-part series and have included more recipes for this “new” food, than I have ever incorporated in my articles before. Yes, you need to pay attention. This is about a Foundational Food, basic for Health. Period.

In fact, hemp, like coconuts,  is one of the earliest foods to be used by humans, and hemp seeds, which have a rich nutty flavor,  have long been recognized as an excellent source of energy, as well as nutrition.

Hemp is found all over. It may even be growing wild in your yard, especially if you have a rural property. In America, in colonial times, the government forced farmers to grow hemp. It was that important!

Now, let’s not get confused. Industrial hemp (food-grade hemp) is NOT the plant which produces marijuana (and using hemp as food will not affect drug-testing). The two plants are in the same botanical family, but that’s it. You can’t get “high” on food-grade hempseed and its products. But, how does this plant help you?

Hemp is one of the best sources of essential Omega-3 fats which you must eat everyday. You cannot make these important nutrients inside your body, and they are woefully lacking in most people’s diets today, with big-time consequences!

In the other parts of this series, I’ve talked about other food sources, but in these last articles, most of the space is reserved for recipes which I hope you will use as standards in your everyday cooking — replacing the less nutritious ones you use now.

Getting more Omega-3s in your diet is critical for everyone, especially as the ordinary diet produces a severe imbalance with Omega-6 essential fatty acids.

We are trying to reBalance this and correct the ills that too many Omega-6s cause. (Of course you NEED essential Omega-6s, just not SO much as most people get.)

Famed lipids expert, Udo Erasmus, has an oil blend with the correct balance sold as Udo’s Oil (TM) 3-6-9 Blend. It is vegetarian, organic, sustainable, made in the strictest conditions to protect the delicate natures of these precious oils. Learn to use it as the main basis for your needs, OR, as I do, make sure you get at least the best Omega-3 hemp oils (I like that Nutiva’s comes in a dark, GLASS bottle). The rest come in opaque plastic (no BPA).

As best-practice, all of these oils must be used cold, no cooking, and kept in the refrigerator.

The ideal balance is twice as many Omega-3s as Omega-6s. Both of these precious oils are the main structural component of EVERY cell membrane. They are vitally necessary to regulate cell activity, as well as for cell growth and proper cell division.

In addition to building your brain (they are the most important building-block; 70+% of your brain needs to be Omega-3s), having the proper balance of Omega-3s and -6s will also help you:

___   sleep

___   fight inflammation

___   retain  memory skills

___   regain or sustain joint movement and flexibility

___   succeed in increasing muscle and cardio-vascular endurance

___   maintain better healing and enhanced feelings of well-being

___   increase your calorie burning ability.

Udo Erasmus says we need 1 Tablespoon of balanced oil sources per 50 pounds of lean body weight (i.e. “normal” weight). Adults need between 65 grams and 100 grams of good fats a day (that’s 15% – 60% of calories from good fats) in a 2,000 calorie a day diet.

Finding ways for kids to accept new foods means that you have to give them versions of what they are already used to eating, and make it fun. Adults, sometimes act the same way, but hemp foods really are tasty, so just give it a go!

With hemp, you’ll be ingesting no pesticides;  this plant is so strong, farmers don’t need to use poisons, so it’s an ecologically-sound, organic crop right away! It’s probably the best ecological, organic protein source.

Buying hemp seed in bulk online from Manitoba Harvest, Nutiva, Navitas Naturals and others will be most economical, as they do sell larger and bulk options.

There are approximately 8 grams of protein in 2 Tablespoons of raw, unhulled hemp seeds (sometimes called hemp hearts). And, hemp contains ALL 10 Essential Amino Acids, too. What a super-food!

Hempseeds are non-gluten food, too, and a great vegetarian and vegan protein source. The same 2 Tablespoons in 1 Cup of spring water or alkaline water, placed in a high-speed blender, will produce nutritious, non-dairy, hemp milk.

Here are some other basic hemp recipes to become basic standards in your repertoire for use every week.

============================================================

Dr. BEN KIM’s HUMMUS

1 can organic chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
1-3 T raw organic tahini
juice of 1 small organic lemon
sea salt, to taste
organic extra-virgin olive oil OR hemp oil  (start with 1T)
Hemp protein, too, if desired OR  4T hemp seeds

Optional: a little lemon juice and / or Celtic sea salt

Rinse and bring canned chickpeas to a boil for one minute to help remove preservatives, then drain. If you use dry chickpeas, soak them in water overnight and cook until tender over low to medium heat.

After warming up chickpeas in a pot of boiling water and draining them, combine chickpeas and all other ingredients except oil in a food processor. As the ingredients blend together, add oil until desired consistency is reached.

Use with toasted whole grain bread, sliced tomatoes and lettuce. You can serve hummus at room temperature, cold, or warm – just after mixing.  The hummus keeps well in an airtight container for several days in the refrigerator.

JULIE MORRIS’ DEHYDRATOR KALE CRISPS

Makes Makes: about 4 servings

Kale chips are very expensive in stores, so here’s how to make your own. Kale is a powerhouse vegetable. It is SO nutritious that it pulls massive nutrients from the soil. In fact you MUST use ORGANIC kale, as this soil-pulling action gathers everything from the soil. In polluted fields, kale is actually used to detoxify the soil and this regular kale is sold as food! The only “safe” kale is organic, which has been grown in non-polluted soil to begin with!

Whether you use an oven or a dehydrator, these chips are exceptionally flavorful.

You can also enjoy this recipe as a delicious fresh kale salad — just put together the ingredients and do not dehydrate.

Note: depending on the size of the kale bunches, you will need more or less salt. Start with just 1/4 tsp and only add more if needed.

2 large bunches organic latigo (also called “dinosaur”) kale
3 T hemp oil
2 T fresh lemon juice

2 t onion powder
½ t Celtic sea salt
1 t garlic powder

¼ t black pepper
2T  heaping, fresh dill, chopped

Remove the thick parts of the stem from the kale leaves, (keep them to use in soups) and tear the leaves into 3″ x 3″ pieces inside a big bowl.

Then, in a small bowl, mix together the oil, lemon juice, onion powder, Celtic sea salt, garlic powder and pepper. Pour this mix into the kale bowl.

Using your hands, gently massage the oil mixture into the kale leaves, squeezing and tossing the vegetables as you go to help soften the leaves. Mix it all for about 2 minutes, then add the dill and toss until combined.

Regular Oven Method:

Heat the oven to 250F degrees.

Spread the kale out as flatly as possibly onto a couple of baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake for 50-80 minutes, or until kale has dried out and is crispy.

Keep a close eye on the kale at the end of its cooking process to make sure it does not burn.

Store in an airtight container to prevent kale from softening.

Dehydrator Method (preferred):

Warm the dehydrator to 115F degrees. Spread out the kale onto 4 perforated dehydrator sheets, and dehydrate for 10-12 hours, or until crispy (time may vary depending on the relative humidity on the day you process it).

============================================================
HEMP HALAVAH

1 1/2 C shelled hempseeds
1/2 C organic honey (raw), (use another sweetner if to be eaten by children under 3 years old)

Finely grind 1C hempseeds in a coffee grinder (keep 1/2C whole for outer crust).

Empty the 1C ground seeds into a mid-size bowl.

Add honey gradually and knead until smooth. Make sure mixture is solid enough and not too sticky.

Roll out dough on a board or plate, 1/2″ thick. Then, cut into 1″ x 2″ strips.

Spread remaining whole seeds onto plate. Pat the strips in seeds until completely covered.

Store covered  in refrigerator. Use within 3 days.

============================================================
JULIE MORRIS’ HEMP FUDGESICLES

1 packet Nutiva Chocolate HempShake
6 oz organic milk (almond, hemp, rice, soy, goat or cow)
1 ripe organic banana
1 T Nutiva organic coconut oil
Optional: a little Grade B organic maple syrup

Mix very well in a blender, and then pour into popsicle moulds. Freeze. ===============================================================

More hemp recipes next time!

Start transferring these to become some of your “basic” recipes. Get the ingredients and just make the recipes your own once you make them once as originals. Make sure not to heat hemp past 325F and it’s better to NEVER HEAT IT.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

There’s been lots going on this week, and I want to share a new diagnostic modality I’ve been investigating which has had a constantly-improving track-record for the past 30 years. You’ll be surprised!

There’s a healing discipline called Bio-Acoustics and it was begun from a natural-gift bestowed upon Sharry Edwards.  At school, once she mentioned her extra powers of observation (and proved them), her professors advised her to keep her special-talent hidden. But, when Sharry realized how much Good she could DO, she took the Path of Courage and stepped into the frey.

Sharry can hear way beyond the normal range of human hearing. What has that to do with helping diabetics? Wait and see; it’s a fabulously interesting Journey.

When Sharry walks around, she is able to hear the quite real “Individual Sound” we each emit. (I would think this would be difficult to bear, but she does not mention it bothers her. Like others with paranormal senses, she is used to her Gift, I guess.)

The Individual Signature is emitted FROM your ear! All of us could be unconsciously picking up these waves, but for Sharry, this is conscious input. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ear is on the Kidney Meridian which certainly is where Stress lands. So, it all makes sense.

About 30 years ago, she began to realize that there were differences among people, but there were also similarities., especially among people with similar health challenges.

She was hearing it even more when they spoke, for the Human Voice is like a “reporter” of every energy-transaction happening in your body.

I know that I have always noticed that when I am unsettled and certainly when I am too stressed or ill, that I can no longer sing well. In fact, I have used that for the past 40 years as a personal guide to when I am over-doing it!

For Sharry, it’s much more important when she hears what’s “missing” or “in excess” as a person speaks. The frequencies in your Voice are reflective of processes deep within you, and, in fact, over the years, Sharry and her fellow researchers have found that your brain uses this bio-feedback to make vital decisions!

Very few people have a perfect set of frequencies in their Voice Profile, when tested by the increasingly sophisticated computer programs which Sharry and her trained practitioners use. Those who do are those few people you see once-in-a-while and then you KNOW what Health really looks like. (Except for young children, I think I have seen only 3 people in adulthood — who don’t work on their Health with a daily energetic-healing practice — and I’m nearly 65 years old.)

We feel those people’s “magnetism” as like no other.

Sharry worked patiently sorting out the frequency-energy signatures — for each organ, each organ system, each metabolic and chemical bio-process. She mapped the human body in a totally new way, using an Individual Voice Signature to show what was in-Balance and what was not. Then, she learned what to do to attain and regain and maintain Balance.

Wow!

Many of her patients (and she always works with physicians) were leaving to have their diagnosis verified by lab tests. Sometimes the path out of illness was quick (even minutes for some, no matter how long the condition had existed) and for others it took several visits and several adjustments of the healing frequencies.

The brain is quick to entrain itself to pick-up “missing” frequencies. It may take a little different path for “excessive’ ones, but sooner rather than later, your brain is reBalanced for that issue.

So, here’s the gist of the treatment and how to contact her and the practitioners she’s trained.

She is still the only one who can hear the Individual Signature and match the tones needed to re-Balance. So, as others don’t have the Gift, she had computer engineers developed programs for analysis of our spoken words, at her instruction.

The practitioner then must be fastidious in choosing what’s needed to Balance. Some frequencies are “thin”, others are “missing”, yet others are in “excess”, others show patterns of disorganization, microbial invasion, poor assimilation of nutrients or poisoning (even by foods and supplements) and also such things as lack of discernment.

The practitioner does the Math (only high school level needed) and calculates the frequencies or combination of frequencies needed to start the Healing right there.

Then, a portable device is programmed so you can listen on a prescription time-frame or as needed.

A return visit, a new Voice sample, a new status and you may or may not need a new Sound Prescription.

What is basically happening is Everything in the Universe has a Frequency, especially living things, which have quite individual signatures within their Kind.

The given prescription sounds start to entrain your brain and re-organize it to Balance. The bio-feedback then helps your brain send healthy messages out to your body. Systems and biochemistry and individual organs, bones and even individual muscles all respond.

And, taking new Voice Prints show if more needs to be done, or not. Sometimes there are layers to dis-ease, which just peel back like an onion. Other times, it’s fairly straight forward.

Balancing the Voice Print even heals the most traumatic and life-threatening situations. One of the situations happened to Sharry’s child who was in a diving accident in a remote place, waiting 45 minutes for emergency help to arrive. She could have easily bled to death in minutes, but Sharry was able to perfectly-intone the frequencies which kept her child alive because there was NO bleeding from a MASSIVE wound. Yep!

Now, they have researched causes for the imbalances for many conditions, including Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Gout, Parkinson’s, AUTISM, allergies and many more.

If you want to get in touch, then go to Sound Health Inc. You’ll see a list of practitioners there, too, and when classes are being given if you would like to learn the real-healing edge of modern medicine. We certainly need more people to be willing to learn this.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

This post contains helpful health information and the request for some advocacy to support a particular health-oriented Bill in the US House of Representatives! Read on.

First, the legislation, as you need to contact your Congressional delegate. Read about the situation and go to the letter-to-respond site, below.

From our friends at The Life-Extension Foundation: Thanks for alerting me!

April 5, 2011, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the US House of Representatives. It’s  called the Free Speech about Science Act (H.R. 1364). This landmark legislation protects the public’s right-to-know by protecting basic free speech rights as they pertain to the current censorship of science.

The Bill enables the natural health community to share peer-reviewed scientific findings with the public – which will help introduce the public to efficacious therapies and natural products for alternative (and mainstream) physicians to use or for self-administration from a position of educated choice.

The Free Speech about Science Bill has the potential to transform medical practice by educating the public about the real science behind natural health, instead of it being demonized by an actually organized, self-serving campaign, especially from an online group (Quackwatch) that serves no-one’s best interest. It’s been exposed that some of those people have links to Big Pharma, in varying degrees.

The Bill will have opposition:

___   from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) (which has many members increasingly “muffled” or others with deep ties to Big Pharma) – who will oppose it since the Bill restricts their ability to censor the dissemination of published scientific data.

___   from drug companies fearing competition from natural health approaches based on diet, dietary supplements and lifestyle. These pharmaceutical companies show they are motivated by self-interest and with their “deep-pockets”, they have held Congress captive. Just the fact there is a courageous Bill is real progress. Now you have to boost individual law-makers to have the courage to pass it!

___   and possibly from mainstream medical associations, who pipe-their-own-tune as they desire, but constantly want to “muffle” others, including their own members!

The public,  wants and needs access to credible information they can use to make wise dietary and Health choices. Please don’t let any special interest groups stop this bill.

Here’s where to write your Congressional delegate. Do it for yourself, and more importantly, do it for your children and future generations. The world needs people to be proactive about their Health as dis-ease and poor health is spreading because of ignorance. Society needs this information to turn-things-around before poor Health robs us individually and as a nation.

Next, Magnesium is critically depleted in most Westerners, especially Americans, and even more so within diabetics, anywhere!

Please read my previous article about MAGNESIUM
– click on link.

Among other critical functions, magnesium is needed for over 300 enzymes, your nerves and your bio-electric cellular ion-transport system. Many of your immune system cells require magnesium to fight for you effectively. Read the article above!

Very few scientific studies utilize women as subjects, but women are at risk for cardiac death because many doctors aren’t monitoring them well-enough, preferring to think it’s mostly a male problem.

Well, I had a savvy, otherwise-healthy friend keel-over and die, when she could afford the best care. So, here again, take this study into your doctor and let him watch over you without thinking you’re being a hypochondriac.

The Life Extension Foundation Magazine reports:

“Greater dietary intake of magnesium and higher plasma magnesium levels are associated with a reduced risk of sudden cardiac death in women, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  It’s long [been] known for its anti-arrhythmic properties in cellular and experimental models … .

Scientists examined dietary intake data collected from more than 88,000 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study. During 26 years of follow-up, 505 cases of sudden cardiac death occurred. In a case-control analysis, the scientists compared plasma magnesium levels between 99 sudden cardiac death cases and 291 control patients. Higher dietary intake of magnesium and higher plasma magnesium levels were associated with lower risks of sudden cardiac death.

These findings suggest that increasing magnesium intake and plasma levels may protect women against sudden cardiac death by preventing abnormal heart rhythms.”  Dr. E. Wagner, MD reported.

Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information” (TM)

Well, another week has gone by with continued uncertainty about how large a nuclear event will happen in Japan, how much area of Japan and the world will be contaminated, as well as to what degree. This whole scene should be making all of us think hard!

The best solution to the energy-crisis (and looming rising oil costs) is conservation! It can do more than anything else to help the planet and our fiscal stability – personally and nationally.

All of us need money for more important things in life — like supporting our Health. We have to make serious choices here.

An Japanese-American nuclear physicist, just returning from Japan, was interviewed locally last night. He said that what happened imminently was going to determine the extent of the disaster, now that they have determined nuclear reactor 3 has been “breached” and serious radiation was beginning to escape.

He continued, that if, because of radiation hazard for the firemen and reactor workers, they have to stop dousing the other two at-risk reactors, and thereby they melted-down too, this would be a “much bigger catastrophe than Ukraine’s Chernobyl” (which has a dead-zone around it which will last for at least a couple of centuries).

The location of these 3 plants and the wider circle of contamination  will effectively impact Japan and Honshu Island to a huge degree, really pushing already strained population centers to the max. It would mean  removing a huge contaminated area, which threatens to bi-sect the island and make each half disconnected.

Already the economic impact is tremendous, with parts and supplies needed for already-exported goods not being able to be manufactured. The crisis will mean jobs lost or furloughed all over the world.

That’s bad enough, but now back to Health. Unfortunately, as I suspected, the longer the radiation was spewing, the more likely that even the ocean would be effected. I don’t know how far and how deep the samples were taken but news this week said “seawater” was showing radiation, as was land water, milk, spinach, potatoes, and some root crops (!), like turnips.  All still at “non-problematical levels”, but if the situation goes awry, as described above, all bets are off.

It’s a shame, as Japan’s industrial rise was based on a land which had NO ready-to-go natural energy resources of its own. I wish that over these last few decades, they would have immediately researched wind (which the Americans did and then turned the technology and industry over to the Japanese to manufacture), geo-thermal and wave-action technologies (their best source, but least-researched) and solar (which is less useful to them, as they are a far-north country), but all would help.

The Japanese government went against their people’s traditional Shinto respect for Nature in choosing nuclear power and it has come back to bite them with a vengeance.

The shame is shared by America. It turns out that General Electric (GE) manufactured this “cheap” version of a nuclear reactor. The global corporations are wreking their havoc again. I do not know to whom else they sold this crappy reactor, which is doing just what critics were concerned it would do. But, in reports online,  I did read that there are at least 23 of the same GE nuclear reactors in nuclear power stations in the United States! Some are even on earthquake faults here.

So, everyone, you may have one of these monsters on your doorstep. I suggest you find out, and while you’re at it, start campaigning to get it decommissioned, like we did (decades ago) to the one plant that our power company (built against our wishes), on the Columbia River, in Oregon. We know we are as safe and responsible as we can be, now. Can you say the same? Yes, it took a long public campaign and a short time to vote and then goosing the utility and the government to do what The People wanted. All the more reason for you to start now.

Oregon then followed through on energy conservation and research. We have wind-farms, wave-technology starting on the Oregon coast, bike lanes and public-use bikes in major cities, new, efficient forms of public transportation reaching as deeply as possible into suburban neighborhoods etc. Support for sharing cars. We have revised codes and building standards. We are intent on Green.

This allows all of us in Oregon to have the 2nd forward-most thinking and action on Healthcare.

Until last Thursday, I would have said First. But, to their credit, the Legislature in Vermont wrote and passed historic legislation to get private, for-profit health “insurance” companies and “health-plans” out of Vermont!

In the next couple of years, a plan being crafted now, will bring to Vermonters the nation’s first universal health-coverage! Bravo! Brava! It will be a single-payer system. And it will be drafted in co-ordination with physicians, so the emphasis will be Health and not admin or drug company lobbying.

Vermont is another Green-thinking state, not wildly spending our grand-children’s future.

Oregon and Vermont have a lot to teach the rest of the nation and you need to make your so-called “representatives” take a serious look. Instead of supporting the new campaign for nuclear power to rise again in  America, quash it! Stop it now and forever. Otherwise, people will be dealing with lots more than diabetes, as fallout, sooner or later.

Health and social services, as well as public-safety,  have to be the first concerns of any government, and we cannot have this when we are mired in poor decisions and falsely-helpful technology raping us in other areas of life.

Aussies and others have had successful experiments with cars run on water cells etc., there’s SO much alternative energy research to do to help the planet and ourselves. We need to support that research and not let researchers be harassed (and worse) by goons from big-Oil.

Now, as promised last week, I’ll share why Dr. Robert Jay Rowen, MD cautions about the media’s use of potassium iodide as an effective help for this potential crisis of radiation poisoning, for the following reasons.

There’s been a massive run on potassium iodide, and regular store shelf supplies in some West Coast cities is sold-out. “Experts” are telling people that this combination will protect them from nuclear fallout, but Dr. Rowen says “They’re wrong!”.

He says that potassium iodide is a good product, but that the potassium is supposed to protect you from the radioactive cesium molecules. And the iodide protects against radioactive iodine isotopes.

But, here’s the problem:
___   First, in his opinion, there’s not nearly enough potassium in this combination to protect you against the radioactive cesium. (In your body, cesium acts like potassium. So the theory is that if you have enough potassium in your body, that is supposed to prevent your body from absorbing the cesium.)

But Dr. Rowen believes that most people are so deficient in potassium, that the small amount in potassium iodide won’t protect you. Instead, he says that you need to take a separate potassium supplement to protect yourself.

___   Second, Dr. Rowen says that you have to protect a lot more than your thyroid from radiation. The iodide in potassium iodide will protect your thyroid, but it won’t be as efficient at protecting your breasts and other organs.

Iodide and iodine — each serves slightly different roles in your body, and they each protect different organs, in different ways.

Yes,  iodide is only one form of iodine. In the event of nuclear fallout, it’s vital you protect your body with both nutrients, and potassium iodide doesn’t provide iodine.

Iodine is essential for your thyroid, and this gland needs it most — this is especially true for children’s thyroid glands, as they are growing and have faster metabolisms, so radioactive iodine will damage their gland much more.

If you’re deficient in Iodine, as most Americans are, your thyroid will pick up any iodine your body ingests (we’ve talked about this danger before). This includes grabbing radioactive iodine isotopes, which can then poison your thyroid.

But, Dr. Rowen says, if your thyroid is sufficiently full of iodine, your gland will ignore any other iodine passing by — including radioactive iodine.

There are two products that provide ample amounts of both iodide and iodine, in addition to food sources.

___ Dr. Guy Abraham, MD’s landmark product, Iodoral, is the first. Dr. Rowan says ” I think most people should take one capsule daily, just for general nutritional purposes. I do. After a few weeks, your thyroid should be sufficient in iodine and iodide, making your organs more resistant to radioactive iodine.” Iodoral is a pill and tasteless, whereas that cannot be said for the next choice.

___  A good (but foul-tasting)  alternative is Lugol’s solution. This should be available from your pharmacist. Explain what you need it for so you get the correct version.  This is a centuries-old formula, from a Frensh pharmacist, for this lack-of-iodine problem, which used to be rampant in Europe plagued with goiter.

In a way, it is the liquid form of Iodoral. Two drops of this Lugol’s Solution – an iodine/iodide product —  is equivalent to one Iodoral tablet. Dr. Rowen says: “If you know there’s a significant risk of radioactive iodine exposure, you can double or triple the Lugol dose in the short run.”

___   Finally, Dr. Rowen also mentions that potassium iodide cannot protect you against the radioactive heavy metals — like uranium and plutonium! This is the greatest hazard!

Uranium atoms seem to be too large for conventional chelators to grab, so he recommends Metal Magnet.

It is a totally natural supplement from decayed organic matter, which contains active humic and fulvic acids. These are complex large organic molecules which are structured with lots of carboxylic acid chemical groups (which attract metals like a magnet). All size  metal molecules will fit in, even the big-boys like uranium. Find Metal Magnet on the Internet.

___   Strontium 90, which a also radioactive mineral, and has been found in American dairy in the past; it is a more difficult issue, as it is chemically similar to calcium,  so it can enter and stay in your bones — potentially causing bone cancer.

The  EDTA protocol can chelate calcium, so it should also grab strontium, and studies suggest it does. Dr. Rowen says: “For strontium 90, consider both oral and rectal EDTA, which may offer limited protection. If you are exposed to radiation, I’d go directly to intravenous EDTA under the care of a trained chelation doctor.”

___   And, as general, everyday protection:

He also recommend taking Chlorella (15 tablets daily!). This algae  is an excellent metal detoxifier and it is definitely a superfood; get it in juice form, too, in smaller quantities tho’,  in many of the “green” juices. Read the labels.

When the Ukrainian nuclear plant at Chernobyl melted down, Russian researchers found brown seaweed (alginate) greatly reduced radiation poisoning. Dr. Rowan suggests  Modifilan and  Pectasol Chelation Complex (same as Dr. Fuchs) as both products are rich in alginates. OR, as I have said many times — start using kelp in your diet. Read my archive.

Advanced Detox Formula has a long track-record helping cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. The formulation greatly reduces the amount of radiation their body absorbs, so it will work for environmental exposure, too.

This protects you with its sulfur-bearing detoxification nutrients, which also help regenerate your greatest body-made anti-oxidant, glutathione. I suggest some sulfur-rich foods below. Dr. Rowan says to be  sure to take ADF along with supplemental vitamin C (2-8 grams daily ! Whoah!) and vitamin E (1,200 IU daily) when exposed to radiation. He suggests  vitamin E as Unique E, Carlson’s E, and Delta-Fraction Tocotrienols (take one softgel, twice a day).

I don’t know about you, but I have trouble after 500 mg of Vitamin C. I’d be in the bathroom all the time, but maybe if exposed to massive radiation, one can tolerate that much Vitamin C as your body would be using it up at a furious rate! So, I hope all this helps our Japanese friends, and any who are exposed in future nuclear events.

___   Dr. Rowen, MD is a kindred spirit, as he, too, brings us back around to letting Food Be Your Medicine and savior. Remember, that everyday use of  certain foods can protect you — especially if you are eating as many raw, Living Plant Foods (LPF) as possible.

Plants have to survive constant assault from solar radiation. So, their plant chemicals  can help protect you as well. The Japanese use many of these products just naturally, and especially after the atomic bombs were dropped on them during WW2.

Generally, the Japanese diet is the healthiest in the world; their people are the most long-lived and if anyone can survive this catastrophe, the Japanese can, given half-a-chance as they already have all these good habits in place.

Their research has shown that for general radiation exposure, whether nuclear, or even medical gamma ray exposure, that Japanese fermented soybean paste ( miso) can protect you. Many studies confirm the efficacy of fermented soy, but it is salty, so a tablespoon is a lot to use at one time. Miso soup is a good choice. The recipe from Jim Healthy I published last time is at a level you can use through the day.

As an aside, Dr. Rowen tells  of a hospital right under ground zero in Japan, which survived the bombing. It was spared the destruction of the blast (which went outward more than downward). One of the doctors walked outside after the bomb dropped, saw the total destruction, walked back inside and told everyone to start eating miso. Those who did were spared radiation sickness, even at ground zero!

Organic soy bean miso is easy to find in the refrigerator case of good health stores. Read the labels, as some miso is also made from barley, and I do NOT know if it would have the same protective properties.

Tofu is NOT fermented. It does NOT count, and I would think the same is true of the whole soybean (edamame), as it is the fermentation process which releases other compounds in the soybean. Eat edamame for other healthy purposes. And, do NOT cook miso! Just add it at the end of the cooking process; just swirl it into the dish.

Start to eat seaweeds, sprouts, miso and radishes, onions and garlic everyday.

As a start: try Tofu – Seaweed Burgers Note: this makes 10-12 burgers. Experiment to see if they freeze well OR just reduce the recipe. Hijiki is a robust seaweed with lots of texture. You can also substitute nori seaweed without soaking or use several tablespoons of kelp sprinkles. Each of the potatoes (use the skin, too), seaweed and miso are very pH alkaline foods, That’s GOOD.

OK, we’re done, but find out if there’s a nuclear power plant near you and start to get it decommissioned like we did in Oregon; start to learn more about energy conservation; start to be proactive for getting the federal government to set aside research money to be spent on alternative energy; let your representatives know that you do NOT support expansion of the nuclear industry.

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

For diabetics, even though Egypt is reaching out to enter a new epoch in its long history as a nation, its recent events brings up the issues of navigating the modern world for diabetics. For those with diabetes, worrying about family in Egypt during the recent revolution probably found their diabetic blood sugars upset or even out of control blood sugar levels. Stress does this. Those diabetics caught in the midst of the unrest also potentially found access to medication, food and medical care upset. All this means you always have to have a personal back-up food and medication plan and when you travel, even doubly so.

In solidarity with the hopes of the Egyptian people, in their quest for clean elections and honest self-government, I will share a recipe for Koshari – Egypt’s national food.

Like our hamburgers and fries, this is the food Egyptians love. It is usually vegetarian, filling and inexpensive. With fewer Egyptians eating at home, especially for lunch, the Koshari cooks work from street carts in the marketplace.

Their clanking serving spoons on the bowls holding the diverse grains, legumes, spices, and sauces makes a tapping sound, like music, and that draws the hungry shoppers and workers walking by. For the humblest workers, a breakfast of Koshari may be the only meal until just before bed, late at night.

Usually Koshari is a combination: of lentils, garbanzo beans (chickpeas, ceci), Egyptian basmati rice and a macaroni pasta. It is topped with: spice blends, garlic and  tomato sauce, then garnished with caramelized onions, vinegar and a tangy traditional Shatta salsa.

The preparation is important – all the legumes, macaroni and rice must be kept to small dollop-size portions, and each must be cooked separately, so that each item holds its flavor.

Rinse the cooked beans ( matpe or brown lentils) in boiling water, after cooking to remove any residual starch film – the impact of that technique is to feature each item’s taste, purely, then enhance them with a generally applied sauce that elevates the  dance into a whirlwind of flavor and aroma.

French green lentils (preferably organic) may not be a traditionally-used lentil, but these are much more nutritious.

This is a dish with many sources of vegetarian protein, so in the combination, there’s probably sufficient amino acids BUT as Egypt is not a wealthy country for the general population, the balance of carbohydrates in the dish is very high. This would be better to bring the meal more in a Zone recipe balance by adding 4 – 6 ozs. of a steamed or poached or grilled fish fillet, and a large green salad (including deep greens like kale, romaine, parsley and cilantro) which can stand up to Koshari’s spicy sauce while adding a counter-point.

I first saw Anthony Bourdain enjoying this dish on his series No Reservations and I was intrigued. It was hard to decide which Koshari recipe to use to represent a nation, but you’ll easily find more online if you want. Just remember, as diabetics, carbohydrates are the issue! Carbs must be fewer in quantity and frequency if they are from grains, period.

By adding oil and the fiber from beans and the salad, the blood sugar response timing is slowed down. Then, by only having a small portion of Koshari, bolstering the meal with healthy lean protein from fish and incorporating a salad, you have a better Zone meal, safer for those with diabetes.

There’s approximately 360 calories in the Koshari portion of the meal, along with about 63 grams of carbohydrate and only 14 grams of vegetarian protein — that’s why you need the 4 – 6 0z. portion of fish. My notes are included in parentheses.

=========================================================================
Guardian.co.uk Koshari

AHDAF SOUEIF’S TRADITIONAL EGYPTIAN KOSHARI

Serves 4

2 C  pasta (macaroni and broken-up angel hair pasta)
1 C Egyptian basmati rice, washed
1 handful vermicelli, cracked (this is like angel-hair pasta or thinnest spaghetti) (or chicken flavored Rice-A-Roni)

1 C brown lentils, washed (I suggest French green lentils)
2 medium onions
2 tomatoes, juiced (or equivalent of organic canned tomatoes)

1 T sunflower oil (or organic, extra-virgin olive oil is even better)
3/4t sea salt
1t   pepper

chili powder (optional)
chicken stock bouillon cube (optional)

tomato paste concentrate
4 cloves garlic
3 limes (or small lemons)
1 heaping teaspoon cumin

Additional Garnish: Bragg’s organic apple cider vinegar, cilantro, parsley
4 – 6 oz. fish fillet – poached and put on the side
Salad ingredients – as desired, in a separate dish

———————————————————————————————————————————

• Boil the second set of pasta, separately, in salted water till cooked (less than 10 minutes or instructions on box).
• Meanwhile, bring the lentils to the boil in water then simmer (20 minutes), taking care not to over-cook.

• Fry the rice and vermicelli briefly in 1T of oil then add 1C of water. Bring to the boil and season with a little salt. When the water recedes so that it is just a film on the surface, put on the lowest possible heat and cook undisturbed for 20 minutes. (OR you could use a box of chicken flavored Rice-A-Roni, if you want.)

For the Basic Red Sauce

• Put the juiced tomatoes into a saucepan.
• Heat some oil in a frying pan. Dice one onion finely and fry till golden.

• Pour the onion mixture into the juiced tomatoes. (You could now add the chicken stock cube to the mixture if desired.)
• Add 1t of pepper and 3/4t of salt. (If you like your food hot, this is the moment to add chili powder, to taste.)

• When the sauce has reduced nicely, add half a small carton or can of tomato paste concentrate and 1 ½  cups of water. Simmer.

For the tangy sauce – the “takhdi’ah” or “shatta

• Peel and crush 4 cloves of garlic.
• Mix with the juice of the limes (or lemons).

• Season with salt and up to 1 teaspoon of cumin (add in increments).
• Add spoonfuls from the red sauce into the shatta mixture. Start tasting after 12 spoonfuls. When you like the taste, stop. Finally, add a drop of oil to give it a shine.

Poach, steam or grill your fish portion, to balance the meal.

For the garnish

• Slice 1 onion into fine crescents and fry it dry in a frying pan for about five minutes (this is to get rid of the water in the onion).

· Add 3T of oil and fry till dark brown, but not burned. You must watch the pan!

• Drain the onion of any excess oil and spread on some kitchen paper towel.

To serve

• Place on a flat plate or in (rimmed) bowls. Put 1 layer of pasta, followed by 1 layer of rice, followed by 1 layer of lentils. Each layer is slightly smaller than those below. You make a dome.

(OR, add as dollops of the pasta, pasta mix and lentils, with the sauce and garnishes just in the center, so you can mix and combine more individually. This is the way I believe I saw the plate Anthony Bourdain was served.)

Spoon over the tomato sauce, then add some takhdi’ah in the middle. Add the fried onions on top of the  takhdi’ah sauce.

• Serve with the poached fish and a green salad on the side – preferably dark green, like rocket, spinach or watercress and fresh serve a non-acidic juice or water.

Follow with a glass of fresh mint tea. (This is very traditional end to an Egyptian meal.)

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

I cannot express the grief I feel about the senseless carnage which took the life of this gracious, bright and loving child in Tuscon, Arizona last week. I will miss you, Christina Taylor Green, and mourn all the good you could have contributed to the world, if given the chance.

A few days ago, your Spirit returned to Source from whence you came; today, your Earth Mother holds you close. Now safe. Rest. Your job is done. Now, it’s our turn.

As I am trained in Psychology and Education, I continually read the articles about how the mentally-ill and mentally-vulnerable are not being attended to (starting in the ’80s with Reagan), and without a caring and effective life-line, this young man’s poor choices can be the senseless result.

Tonight, CBS News anchor, Katie Couric, reports that 30% of Americans have some form of mental illness, 5% of them with severe cases. I think a lot of this is from decades of casual drug use among many Americans – parents (drug use before, during and after – affecting genetics and parenting skills), sometime-to-be parents and kids.  And the other major source: decades of poor nutritional choices among even more people with jeopardized or broken genetics and / or biochemical imbalance as a result. And, for some, it is poverty which causes poor nutrition, but it can have the same results.

In this incident, so many lives needlessly lost, and mostly because the talking heads – official and otherwise – have raised the level of disrespect and unsupported rhetoric SO high.

They had better be reversing this in the halls of Congress, the halls of FOX News, radio chat shows and in the churches and organizations of hate and vitriol.

Let’s see statesmanship, civil and honest discourse which attempts to find common ground and compromise; let’s aim for a centrist agenda. All that counts is the Good of the Nation, not corporations, special interests, power-mongers. It needs to be central and all that is attended to. Get to The People’s Business, only.

And, healthcare reform needs to be settled, fairly, now!

For, without access to preventative care (and at a fair fee which people can afford), the nation cannot have a citizenry with a healthy, trim and  vigorous body,  and with a mentally-stable, well-nourished mind. This nation’s destiny is at-risk in ever-increasing increments, from within and outside our borders, and we are turning into weaklings.

Whether it be the drug-cartel violence at the Mexican border and the havoc their product produces in our vulnerable young people, while society is ineffectually fighting it OR whether it’s China with their aggressive, ready, million-man army (and it’s successful recent missile tests), the world is very scary at the moment.

We can reverse ALL this if we work together and don’t disengage.

Each of us has to become an instrument of positive change, like Gabe Zimmerman and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords were trying to be, and like the interested, involved citizens, who attended her Meet “N’Greet “Congress on your Corner”.

Our prayers are with all the families.

As balm for Christina’s family, John and Roxanna Green, their 11 year old son Dallas and extended family, as well as for the others personally touched by the larger tragedy, we pledge this as a time for reflection.

Figure out what you can do to make the world around you a better place.

Start small and keep working. No endeavor is insignificant. Just start. And, hold your elected officials’ feet-to-the-fire. Pay attention to what they are and what they are not doing on your behalf and the Nation’s behalf.

Things just can’t be business-as-usual because, for decades, the People’s Business has NOT been done!

Listen to and READ many sources. Get many points of view. Then, make your own opinion. Next, work to make your voice heard.

At the same time, settle on a set of steps as to how you can make your own and your family’s “lot” better if these officials act, and even more if they don’t act!

The American Dream is, at best, on hold. Whether we can speak of it in a hopeful Future, depends on us seeing the return of a vibrant, reasonable-size middle-class. THAT  will determine the fate of our country.

And, in turn, this time, the middle-class has to help those below them better than they did before.  And, all of us need laws to put the top 1% – 2% of the wealthy on notice, that the land and money and power grab is over.

Get Campaign Reform in place and that cuts off the power-mongering immediately!

When this Congress and this Executive can kowtow to special interest and pressure from the powerful to enact tax-cuts for the wealthy, giving away another 800 billion dollars of now uncollectable tax money from the wealthy, officials are left with unacceptable choices for making “cuts”.

Only trying to tear-down so-called “entitlements” for those who paid into these systems and now need them OR for the most-needy, least healthy of us who need the services is a heinous, unfair plan to be thinking of as the source of fiscal re-balancing.

And, for the military spending-cuts, their wisdom remains to be seen.

But, clearly, the wealthy 1%-2% are NOT paying their share and have undue influence while owning more than 50% of the wealth of this wealthiest nation in the world. And, no, the science shows that their wealth does NOT “trickle-down” nearly as much as it should. They actually don’t stimulate the economy with their money.

America needs to be better on all levels and I think her citizens must insist upon it and contribute their own actions to Positive Change.

So what, that Congress voted to extend the tax-cuts for the wealthy. Go back, re-visit the issue and re-craft the Law. That’s where huge change needs to begin.

And, the Federal government needs to make sure that the states don’t go under. The purse is too unbalanced in Federal favor. The states are the one’s best able to deliver what their citizenry needs, and several are destitute, or on the brink.

More than 30 states cut their mental health budgets, by a total of 2 billion dollars, and that’s part of why there is a lack of treatment options. It opens the chance for these tragic occurrences, and people have to be willing to alert authorities to those who are behaving irrationally, with a strict set of published criteria, so that the system is not abused.

Nothing is cast in stone, but when people are “hurting” as desperately as many people are, without acknowledgment that means anything concretely, then more trouble can happen.

So, let’s make sure we are walking in a better direction. It starts with each of us. Tell your Congress that you want the tax-cuts for the wealthy revisited and that you want real healthcare reform, with the public option as a central underpinning. Hop to it!

I received an email recently, and part of it said:

“They say it takes a minute to find a special person,
an hour to appreciate them,
a day to love them,
but then an entire life to forget them.”

That’s how I feel about you, Christina. May your Light always shine in our hearts, and may we be worthy of that.

Best to all — Em

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This Information!” (TM)

The last couple of months of the year are filled with celebrations and it will help world Peace if we try to understand one another better, so here you can learn more about others, what they celebrate and why. I hope that it will encourage you to learn more and integrate with the people of our planet. The diabetes articles will continue in the new year. Make good food choices for your celebrations!

This is a shared month of holy times:

___   Devali, the Hindus Festival of Light and celebration of the Hindu New Year. was celebrated the first week of November in 2010. Diwali is a five day festival which also honors the victory of good over evil, and brightness over darkness. Also, the festival marks the start of winter.

On the third day of the festival, lots of small clay lamps (diyas) and candles are lit and placed in homes giving Diwali hence its name of “Festival of Lights”.

People also clean and decorate their homes with Rangoli – Hindu folk art.  They give each other gifts during the festival, and other rituals vary according to region of India.  However, in most areas, people send special blessings to Laxshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and to Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

The Goddess Laxshmi will visit every home during the Diwali period, bringing prosperity and good fortune. It’s said she visits the cleanest places first, therefore people make sure their homes are spotless, before lighting lamps to invite her in.

___   On December 1 -9 in 2010, the Jews started to celebrate Hanukkah, the Hebrew Festival of Light, a universal holy time for celebration of the triumph for the battle of religious freedom. More about the 8 day celebration can be read at in the Titles Archive above.

The 2,200 year old festival is based on a mixture of historical actions and a religious miracle, during the time when the Jews fought the first battles for religious freedom and tolerance, which have managed to endure, for all of us. It is also known as the Festival of Light and candles are lit on the menorah (hannukiah) for all 8 days.

___   The Muslims started to celebrate on December 7, with Al-Hijira —  Islamic New Year.  This holy day marks the migration of the Prophet Mohammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina, and it is the first day of the month of Muharram. The Journey, the Hijra (or Hegira),  happened in 622 CE, and it was in Medina that Mohammad set up the first Islamic state.

Logically, as the new year, the Muslim calendar counts dates from the Hijra, which is why Muslim dates have the suffix A.H. (After Hijra). It is a low-key event, celebrated less than the two major, recent festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.

Muslims regard this as a good time for ‘New Year Resolutions’, reflecting that the Hajira marks the start of Islam as a community in which spiritual and earthly life were completely integrated. A people could be bound together by faith, rather than just by tribal bonds, and as a consequence, tribal and family loyalties became less significant compared to the bonds of Islam.

Because of the lunar calendar, Ramadan sometimes falls in December (the actual date for the start of Ramadan depends upon the sighting of the crescent moon).

This is the holiest period in the Islamic year, for Ramadan honors the lunar month in which the Qura’n was revealed by God to humanity. So Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan, which lasts for the entire month. Fasting during the daylight hours and eating small meals in the evening, allows for visits with friends and family and using the time for worship and contemplation

___   On December 8 (or on the Sunday immediately preceding), the Buddhists celebrate Bodhi Day (also called Rohatsu). This recalls the day in 596 BCE, in India, when Prince Siddartha, the Buddha, achieved enlightenment.

The Prince had left his family and courtly possessions behind, at the age of 29, and went to seek the meaning of life — particularly the reasons for its hardships.

For many years, he studied and learned from many spiritual teachers without success. Finally, he sat under a bo tree and made a vow, saying that he would stay there until he found the answers he was seeking.

The morning of the 8th day dawned, and he realized that everyone suffers due to ignorance — but ignorance can be overcome through the Eightfold Path which he advocated.

So, celebrate the birthing day of Buddhism. The Buddha achieved enlightenment, and escaped the endless Karmic cycle of birth, death, rebirth through reincarnation — themes that are observed in other religions in December, as you will see below.

___   December 21 — The Solstice — is the first, official day of winter because it is The Winter Solstice (Northern Hemisphere, longest night) and Summer Solstice (Southern Hemisphere, longest day).

This is a very important time for Druids, Wiccans and other nature-based religions, like Shinto, as well as many major religions also reflecting this longer tradition, too —  emphasizing this same time-frame for celebrations of “Light” and the “Light of the World” in the longest time of darkness.

All of this is evidence of an underlying human commonality below what seems to be a diversity of belief.

This year, there was an important lunar eclipse on the Solstice, the first time this has happened since 1638. So it is a very eventful time.

In Celtic culture, which spanned from India to Ireland, Druids and Druidesses formed the professional class in ancient Celtic society. They functioned as: priests, teachers, ambassadors, astronomers, genealogists, philosophers, musicians, theologians, scientists, poets and even judges.

Druids led all their people’s public rituals, which were normally held within fenced groves of sacred trees or at a powerful natural energy source, like the ring of stones at Stonehenge or Avesbury or the Neolithic cave at New Grange in Ireland.

For Druids, the Solstice is the time of the death of the old sun and the birth of the dark-half of the year. Calling it “Alban Arthuan, it is the end of month of the Elder Tree and the start of the month of the Birch tree.

The 3 days before Yule is magical time, when the Serpent Days or transformation occur. In their cosmological view, the Elder and Birch trees stand as guardians at the entrance to Annwn (the Celtic underworld — where all life was formed).  Now, it is time for the Sun God journey’s through the underworld, to learn the secrets of death and of life, and bring out those souls to be reincarnated.

In prehistoric times, and also in times of modern turmoil, winter was a very difficult time for peoples.  The growing season was over;  everyone had to live off of stored food and whatever animals they could catch. See how hard this is to do just by watching “Survivor”!

In earlier times, the people would become troubled as the life-giving sun sank lower in the sky each day.  We can understand their fear that it would eventually disappear and leave them in permanent darkness and extreme cold.

Only after the Winter Solstice, could they have a reason to celebrate. They saw the sun rising and strengthening once more. They were encouraged that the return of the warm season was inevitable.

Even the equitorial based Inca Empire realized the special time, as it moved southward. The ancient Incas celebrated a festival of Inti Raymi at the time of the Winter Solstice. Since the Inca Empire was mainly south of the equator, the festival was held in June, their winter, and it celebrates “the Festival of the Sun;  the god of the Sun, Wiracocha, is honored.  The ceremonies were banned by the Roman Catholic conquistadores in 1572, and the Conquistadors forced conversions of the Inca people to Christianity. But, about 65 years ago, a local group of Quecia Indians in Cusco, Peru revived the festival and now it is celebrated in an ancient amphitheater a few miles away.

In North America, the Pueblo tribe observe both the Summer and Winter Solstices. Specific details of the rituals differ from pueblo to pueblo, but the rites are built around the sun, the coming new year and the rebirth of vegetation in the spring. Winter Solstice rites involve: prayerstick making, retreats, purification and prayers for plenty.

The Hopi tribe dedicates itself to give aid and direction to the sun, which is ready to ‘return’ to give strength to budding life. Their ceremony is called Soyal and it lasts for 20 days. Activities include: prayerstick making, purification rituals and a celebratory rabbit hunt, feast and blessing.

In Iran, Shabe-Yalda (Shab-e Yaldaa) is celebrated by followers of many religions. It originated in Zoroastrianism, the state religion which preceded Islam (and still practiced by the Parsi of India). The holy day’s name refers to the birthday or rebirth of the sun, and Iranians gather at home, all night,  around a korsee (a low square table). There, they tell stories, read poems, eat watermelons, pomegranates and a special dried fruit/nut mix. Bonfires are lit outside which help to illuminate the darkened world.

So, it’s logical that all around the world, the concept of birth and or death/rebirth became associated with the Winter Solstice. Ancient powerhouse civilizations: India, Egypt, Iran (Persia), Brazil, Peru, Greece and Rome, all had these festivals at this time.

And the sophisticated civilizations developed astronomy, to determine accurate time for The Solstice.  So we have Egyptian, Celtic, Irish, American, Mayan, Incan and Brazilian tribal architecture to determine when the Solstice would happen.

There are countless stone structures created by early peoples in the past to detect the Solstices and Equinoxes — e.g. Calendar One, from an unknown American tribe.  This is in a natural amphitheater of about 20 acres in Vermont. From a stone enclosure in the center of the bowl, you see a number of vertical rock structures and natural features on the horizon (which formed the edge of the bowl). At the Solstices and Equinoxes, the sun rises and sets at either a notch or a peak in the ridge, which makes it a  calendar.

But most Prehistoric Aboriginal peoples had no instruments for detecting The Solstice. Astronomically astute, they noticed a slight elevation of the sun’s path within a few days after The Solstice — perhaps by December 25th and this is why celebrations were often timed around the 25th — which is significant to the “chosen” day for Xmas.

___   For Christians, December 25 is an officially agreed-upon time for the Christmas — set aside to celebrate the birth of the Jewish rabbi, Jesus (Yeshua) of Nazareth, known to Christians as “the light of the world”. There is sufficient evidence in the Gospels to indicate Yeshua was actually born in the autumn, but this seems to have been unknown to early Christians.

By the third century CE, many religions and spiritual mysteries were being followed within the “known-world’s” Roman Empire. Most, celebrated the birth of their god-man near the time of The Solstice; it was a common, ancient religious theme.

The Roman Emperor Aurelian (270 to 275 CE) blended a number of The Solstice celebrations of the nativity of such god-men/saviors as: Apollo, Attis, Baal, Dionysus, Helios, Hercules, Horus, Mithra, Osiris, Perseus and Theseus into a single festival. It was called the “Birthday of the Unconquered Sun” and was held on December 25.

At the time, Persian Mithraism and Christianity were fierce competitors for the hearts, minds, souls of the Empire’s peoples. Aurelian declared Mithraism to be the official religion of the Roman Empire in 274 CE. But, Christianity finally won, by becoming the new official religion in the 4th century CE, from a different Emperor’s edict, just before his death, too.

So, with new stature, Christianity at the beginning of the 4th century CE, found intense interest in actually choosing a day to celebrate Yeshua’s birthday.

The western church leaders of the time selected December 25th because this was already the date recognized throughout the Roman Empire as the birthday of various gods; it was a way to be able to celebrate unfettered. That is why many symbols and practices associated with Christmas are really of non-Christian origin: holly, ivy, mistletoe, yule log, the giving of gifts, decorated evergreen tree, magical reindeer and more.

With no central Christian authority at the time, it took centuries before the tradition of December 25th was universally accepted:

___   Eastern Christian churches began to celebrate Christmas on December 25th after 375 CE.

___   The church in Ireland only in the 5th century CE and churches in Jerusalem started in the 7th century CE.

___   Austria, England and Switzerland started celebrating it then the 8th century CE and in Slavic lands in the 9th and 10th centuries CE.

Even now, not all Christians acknowledge December 25 or celebrate it e.g. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not. And, the English Parliament even abolished Christmas in 1647.

___   Kwanzaa – honors universal African-American heritage and culture. It is observed from December 26 – January 1 each year, and features activities such as:  the lighting of a kinara, libations and a feast, and gift giving. It was created by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated on December 26, 1966.

The entry in Wikipedia says the goal was to “give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history”. The name Kwanzaa is a Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits of the harvest.

Kwanzaa celebrates 7 principles of Nguzo Saba, which Karenga said “is a communitarian African philosophy”. These consist of “the best of African thought and practice in constant exchange with the world.”

The 7 principles comprise Kawaida, Swahili for “tradition and reason”, and each of the 7 days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one individual principle:

* Umoja (Unity):  Strive for and maintain unity in: family, community, nation and race.

* Kujichagulia (Self-Determination):  define oneself, name ourselves, create and speak for ourselves.

* Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility):  Build and maintain community. Make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together.

* Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics):  Build and maintain our own businesses and shops, and to profit from them together.

* Nia (Purpose): Make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community. Restore our people to their traditional greatness.

* Kuumba (Creativity): Always do as much as we can, in any way we can, to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

* Imani (Faith): Believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers and our Journey.

And, I hope this long article will foster good will and more awareness.

My hope: May all of us be Blessed with Peace and Health and Understanding and Compassion as we follow and work in the light of the Sun, each new day. Make it count!
